How Catalytic Converters Work, Parts 1 & 2
We just started a series of technical articles that explain how catalytic converters are made, how they work, why people steal them, and why you should probably be running them on your F30. Here are both parts of the post. Give it a read and let us know what you think or if you have any questions about our cats or anything else.
Thanks! "How Cats Work" Part 1 http://www.magnaflow.com/news/?p=680 "How Cats Work" Part 2 http://www.magnaflow.com/news/?p=726 |

How does this relate to our cars and performance? I don't see any literal connection.
Is this how you guys sell things, by posting generic articles about exhaust science on random (to you) car forums? How about a youtube link to one of your exhaust systems on a 335i taking off from a dig, accelerating hard, with a go pro attached? Can I run your marketing department? Are you telling me that by not adding a catless downpipe I won't see significant gains with a proper tune? Way to sell your shit Magnaflow. Every turbo car that I've added an after-market catless downpipe to and had flash tuned always has gained horsepower and torque. Why have I been doing it wrong all these years? |

Probably need to pay before linking to sponsored websites. Other sponsors will get pissed. Although I did learn nothing that I couldn't have in a more concise way if I had googled or wiki-d this information. Thanks again and come back when you pay. Cause Its all about the money, no Free loaders, no free loaders, Please.

I remember pre-catalytic converter cars...really smelly exhaust, but more of a gasoline smell (the unburnt gas in the exhaust stream). Then came the first cars with cats - around 1975 or so, and they smelled like rotten eggs, way worse than the pre-cat exhaust. Along with the cats came no more mixture adjustment on carburetors (before all cars had fuel injection) and the whole flap over having to burn unleaded gas because the lead clogged the cats and caused all manner of propblems. That was also the time of the "5 MPH bumper" requirement, and cars looked like they had steps in front and back.
If you want a real example of why cars should all be running catalytic converters, visit Mexico City or any large city in countries where they have no emissions-control requirements. It's so bad that your eyes water and you start gasping for breath. As the number of cars on the road increases, so does the need for cleaner exhaust.
