Yes, like anything else provided there is no user error.

The key things to remember:

Have your rags fully saturated and folded in half -- wring out just enough so they are not dripping all over, but holding as much water as possible. This will give you lubrication as the rag picks up dirt and contaminants

Move the rag in a straight line and only in one direction and DON'T SCRUB.

Change rag surfaces frequently. Don't drag accumulated dirt over the car.

If your car is caked with salt or mud I would do a rinse at a self-wash bay first.
