The Porsche forum members weren't very inviting to me back in early 2002 when I was shopping for my first Porsche and had the audacity to ask about possible discounts.
But the attitude changed after I bought my Boxster. (At more than $4000 off of sticker...)
My Porsche experience on the whole was good. Put 317K miles on my Boxster, and 150K miles on my Porsche 996 Turbo.
Just for me I got Porsche out of my system. While the Boxster and Cayman S were superb cars with handling one could only imagine the best *road* car was my Turbo. Why? Because with rear seats I could when I got tired stop and recline my seat and stretch out and catch 40 winks. With the Boxster and Cayman with no rear seats just the engine compartment bulkhead behind the seats this was not possible.
The 718 and M2 are quite different cars. Both fine cars but both with limitations/trade offs.
I didn't shop Boxster vs. some front engine car (I had a 2001 Z28 at the time) but I shopped mid-engine cars. Ferrari was out. There was the Pontiac Fiero ("old") or the Toyota MR2. But the MR2 had zero room for luggage. The Boxster had a large front trunk and a good sized rear trunk. While it was considerably more money that the MR2 I bought the Boxster and never looked back.
