On X drive front & rear tires are connected. Mechanical logical says that if there is more than a small tolerance, the f&R tires will cover different distances with each rotation, meaning stress on the system. In this situation, my opinion would be that the design engineer has the best knowledge of the system and the dynamic stresses it can tolerate.
