I attempted to paint the rear badge with a solvent, not waterborne, coating as generally speaking they are superior. It smeared and wouldn’t cover properly.
Surface preparation is the most important factor in any coating activity but I was unwilling to use sandpaper and potentially ruin the badge.
Bought a black badge instead. YMMV

I'm pretty sure the emblems are just plastic but the front M2 emblem has some sort of coating on it that didn't let the paint adhere, even after a light sanding & prep. The X3 M in my wife's grille was easy to paint & still looks great 6k mi later.
