Yep, I'd rather be a 1/2 qt. low than overfill. Maybe once every couple weeks I'll check my oil level when I pull into the garage where I know it's perfectly flat and will add 1/8th qt. if it ever shows to be down to the middle.
I think I've only had to do this after 5,000 miles or so, but I've now made 5,000 miles my OCI (rather than 7,500)...just because.
