I'm not sure how true that is... I remember reading a while back that the fronts could be amber or clear, the sides could be clear as long as they had an orange light when blinking and the rears could be red or amber...
I'm not sure how accurate it is now, but I did read a post on some forums before where some guy actually looked up the legal code.
