My advice is to unless one gets something official from BMW regarding alternative oil brands or a different multi-viscosity to stick with what the factory calls for use in the engine as per the owners manual.
This is not exactly correct. BMW TIS has a page showing the appropriate oils for all engines, and S58T can officially run at least LL01FE in North America if not LL01. The manual is not authoritative. These cars get LL04 or LL12 in Europe. There is no BMW engine that will be harmed by LL01 or 04 oil as it passes the same tests as the "newer" specs with the exception of the fuel economy tests. The only reason the <3.5 and <3.0 HTHS oil specs exist are for fleet fuel economy reasons. S58 in North America has no GPF so it can use LL01/LL01FE and the mid SAPS LL04/LL12 interchangeably.

Oil brand or SAE viscosity is never critical, it is only the specification. You will never be required to use BMW oil and never have been. BMW oil is blended by Castrol in NA and Shell in EU.
