It comes down to how paranoid you are vs how much you actually want to protect the engine. In theory BMW can give you a hard time if they feel like it, but if BMW TIS lists it in the Technically Suitable Engine Oils section, Enclosure 3 to SI 11 07 96 (138) then it should be no problem.

I would personally always choose a quality LL01 or LL04 oil if given the option since they are simply better for the engine long term. If I end up buying a G87 I will probably use Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 or PP Euro 5W-40 since they are both quality LL-01 oils with modern API SP compliant additive packages. The Castrol Edge 0W-30 A3/B4 has a higher quality base oil but also has an older style additive package which is probably fine for S58 but would not pass API SP LSPI tests due to the high calcium levels. Given pricing and availability in jugs I prefer the M1 or PP Euro.
