To be fair, the UK/EU has historically lagged behind the US in terms of adopting technology (post war affect). I guess the AT was one of those items that, as you say, was viewed by many as a luxury. As a result, it was slow to gain in popularity hence everyone learning manual.
For me personally, I only like driving good manuals or dual clutch. Most AT systems are still slow and boring and many MTs are rubbery and notchy. Guess I’m picky
