It's a tough one. I think this depends on the level with which you track.

I bought a truck last year for renovation and for towing my built E36 M3 to the track and thought that it worked for me. For a while. The issue is that I started out thinking that I could attend 10-15+ track days a season and go out of town often. Turned out that I couldn't.

In reality I attended closer to 6-7 a season with the desire to stick around my family and friends for summer weekends instead of always being gone.

There is also the hustle of getting a tow vehicle, getting a trailer and upkeep on a track only vehicle.

If you are going to commit to as many days as you'd like go SUV ( save your money and get a regular X5 ) and go for a track toy. But if you will show up 2-3 times a month in your short driving season like I do, something that can be driven there and back AND enjoyed in between is what makes sense to me.
