Ran into the same thing with the G82. I took delivery of my first one basically at launch (April 2021). The online vocal minority hated it and swore owners would be embarrassed to be seen in it; meanwhile, I got unsolicited props left and right from tons of people in person. If you rode with me, you’d be convinced that BMW made a hit design based purely on all of the attention and random positive feedback.
Ironically, there are several anecdotes of people who hated the G80/82 and now like it and have even bought one.

This is so true, the online car culture is so echo chamber-y compared to the average person into cars.
All of mine and my wife's coworkers who enjoy cars are psyched to see the M2 and have been very positive about it.
You can see this with pretty much anything online, negative sentiments always gets way more traction than positive ones.
