Audi did the full diagnostic check and did not pick up that the ECU had been re-programmed. The work was done free of charge under warranty. If Audi cannot spot the engine has been chipped why will BMW be any better ?
I guess the big question is if BMW do an update of the software, will that overwrite the chipped program and put it back to stock performance levels ?

Your friend was lucky! I've heard of cases where warranties have been invalidated. Seems a big risk to me. Besides, the performance of BMW diesels is superb and (in my opinion) better than much bigger petrol engines - so who needs the chip??
