Here's a fun bit of info from reddit on the topic.

Totally legit union here...

Quote:
Here's ILP's president a few weeks ago talking about their demands on automation and that "I will cripple you and you have no idea what that means":

His name is Harold Daggett. In 2005, he had RICO charges brought against him by the DOJ in connection with the Genovese family keeping control of ILP by getting him made president so they could keep sending contracts to Mafia controlled companies:

> DAGGETT and COFFEY are charged with conspiring to extort the president of the ILA International, John Bowers, to install DAGGETT as the ILA president. As alleged in the indictment, a previously filed complaint and other court filings, **in 1999 the Genovese family decided that DAGGETT should become the next president of the ILA**. In furtherance of the scheme, it is alleged that COFFEY brought Bowers to a meeting with a Genovese family soldier, who delivered the message that the Genovese family wanted to replace him with one of their own when Bowers left the presidency. [0]

He was acquitted when a key witness, mobster Lawrence Ricci, was found dead in the trunk of a car in front of a diner in New Jersey.[1]

Daggett makes more than $1m / year as President of the ILP and owns a 76 foot yacht called "Obsession". His son Dennis is a VP at the union and makes $685k / year.

There’s always the chance that the M2 could approximately double in price for cars arriving in the US after late January, let alone any delay from dock worker strikes: https://fortune.com/2024/09/25/trump...exico-elected/

Watch how fast they expand the SC plant or build one in Alabama like MB did.

I think they would drop the M2 & 2-series coupe for the US and swap the SLP 3-series destined for the US for cars from other plants from countries with a lower tariff than the proposed 100% on Mexican produced cars, as opposed to introducing any mid-lifecyle production of current models to SC.

As there would be counter-vailing tariffs from other countries, the SC plant would be more inward looking (domestic US production) as opposed to expanded, but I can't envision they would keep the same model variety that they bring in from other countries at present. Most likely hybrid SUVs and some car based EVs from SC as the focus, then M-cars from elsewhere at a price premium due to tariffs, as the volumes are not high enough to have multiple production lines at an efficient price point.

They would lose nearly half their 2 series sales if they did that. The US is basically tied with Germany in units sold for the G87. I'd imaging that the G42 is probably similar being a more cost effective option.

They would just cut it as a model before building a new line, I think, as it is not high in the production volume overall (G87 M2 is less than 1% of BMW sales volume overall). The US accounts for about 30% of M2 sales from numbers that were posted last year. SLP production prep and ramp up took a couple of years, the G87 finishes production in 2029 anyway, so I can't see it being introduced on an SC line with the investment required and short time frame it would be produced for.

Probably worth keeping the SLP line running for the G87 production at about 70% volume for ROW until the planned end-of-life as the plant investment there is already done, though.

this is a fun thought experiment. in a hypothetical world where politicians absolutely do everything they claim they are going to (i know, i know, try to stifle your laughter) and Trump's day 1 executive order is a 100% tariff on mexican goods that does not immediately get an injunction from a federal activist judge and sent into 2 years of lawfare...

i think yeah, they kill 2 series coupe for US immediately. realizing it creates a hole in the lineup, they do the cheapest option which is offer de-contented 3 and 4 series models for the US from other global factories. they have M3 and M4 "Pure" models (similar to what they did in Aussie land with the F chassis) that are cloth, manually adjustable seats, cloth door cards, slicktop, no 360 degree camera, no ambient lighting, no rear HVAC, door pulls instead of handles, less sound deadening, reuse cast wheels intended for the G87 or other models. they price it at $70,500 USD which is probably around what the average G87 sells for. they offer base 330 and 430 models in similar configurations, coming from either germany, brazil, or thailand. the market goes positively BONKERS for them, they sell more than they ever dreamed of. M2 dies quietly, not renewed for the next chassis group, and those of us who hung onto our orphan, mexican made M2s are a footnote in a car and driver article in 15 years. automotive PR lapdogs, i mean- journalists - mindlessly parrot that the death of the M2 means nothing and was killed for good reason. "let's face it, the G87 was styled too oddly, weighed too much, featured unoptimized gearboxes, and was generally a disappoint to enthusiasts around the world. somehow, it was also the best selling M car every year it was in production." the irony will be lost on them.
