If you're on the fence about ppf

This is the beating my front end has taken after 20,400 miles. If I didn't have ppf, the paint would be destroyed. I drive primarily interstate 500 mi per week plus 100-200 mi in-town/city.

How much of your car is PPF’d? At minimum I plan to have the front end and carbon fiber roof covered as well as the side skirts but I’m still trying to figure out how much if any of the rear fenders I should have covered. Wondering if people without the rear fender covered have any chips there. My order is in the Quality Assurance stage so delivery should be soon.

Full front end including bumper cover, front air inlets, front splitter, kidney grilles, full hood, front fenders, side mirrors, rocker panels - including a piece behind the rear wheels, & a-pillar kit which includes the roof up to the sunroof.

I did the whole carbon roof.
The only thing I didn't do was the trunk.

I35 between Dallas & Austin is basically a mine field of road debris plus large trucks & the tollway from Dallas to my house is really no better as it's currently under construction.

I feel your pain! Thankfully the M2 is not my daily, but I'm on the Dallas North Tollway daily, and the construction really is a pain. And right now, it seems that every major highway in the metroplex is under some stage of construction.

PPF all the way here - on all of our vehicles.

gotcha. local threat assessment and then adequate protective action is key. over the past 15 years i have been hit by: a turkey jumping off an overpass, tree limbs, a crab apple, and a runaway snowboard. unfortunate incidents but nothing ppf would have prevented for me personally. YMMV and pick what works for you and your area.

I drove the I35 once while visiting a mate in Austin. On that one drive we saw a truck crash, a car on fire and a police chase.
It was like a scene from a movie.

It's definitely like Mad Max Fury Road. I drive down every Monday and back on Thursday. Definitely the part of my week I dread the most. I lost 3 front splitters, a head light, fog light, upper & lower grilles on my previous 3-series in less than a year on that stretch of interstate. No damage to the M2 yet, knock on wood.

When I (briefly) lived in Austin, there was a truck explosion near my office once, rollovers, several-car pileups, cars going off of overpasses, even drove by the scene of a homeless man who ran into the highway at night and was promptly killed.

I-35? More like DIE-35.

Thought I would do a little checking on accident stats on the 500 or so miles of the I35 in Texas, it seems there have been 643 road traffic deaths over the 5 years from 2018 to 2022, so about 129 per year. There are 155,000 or so vehicles on the road each day, so lets say the average vehicle travels 100 miles on it, that would be about one death per 44 million vehicle-miles travelled. This seems to be a horrendous rate to me.

In the UK, the average death rate is one per 200 million miles travelled, the motorways are considered safer than other roads with 20% of the traffic but only 5% of the fatalities. The M1 which is about 200 miles long and has a volume of about 130,000 vehicles a day will likely have about one death per 800 million vehicle miles, about 18 times safer than I35. From news articles it seems there were 4 deaths on the M1 in 2023, as each one is considered a major event.

As they say, "everything is bigger in TX". Fwiw, I'm not a native Texan but have lived here for 18 years now. The speed limit on I-35 between Dallas & Austin is 75mph for most of it, which means 90+ unless you want to get run over by Cletus in his jacked up pickup truck or an 18-wheeler.

Driver's education courses here are horrible. I have a teen that just finished one & said they just watched videos from the 1970s & 80s. He had to complete a few hours of drive time with instructors who, based on what he told us, also provided out-dated information. The rest of the required driving hours are supposed to be completed with the parents or another licensed adult who simply signs off on a form saying the hours were completed.

It's not really a surprise that the US has such a ridiculously high vehicle accident & death rate

I’m always surprised that it is so much higher than Canada with similar distances travelled and both having relatively lax driver testing compared with Western Europe. Supposedly the US has more than double the road traffic fatality rate of Canada, which has a rate about 50% above the UK and Germany.

It’s tough to avoid millions of illegal immigrants running around in addition to all the greenies who glue themselves to roads and bridges.
