Engine temperature high-drive moderately issue

Hi all,

Looking for some peace of mind here. 19k miles on 23 6MT M2.

Driving home from the store yesterday, engine temp too high, drive moderately message pops up.

Drove the car home slowly (just a few miles), never hit the "engine overheating" message.

Coolant is full, oil temps were fine and oil levels are fine, but coolant temp went all the way to the edge of red (didn't go into red).

I'm assuming water pump issue, but really concerned if there is damage to the engine.

Should I be concerned?

I had something similar happen in an older bmw, it was a corroded grounding strap on the water pump. Even though it said I could keep driving I parked it and had it towed. Although your engine is most likely fine, continuing to drive at high temps is absolutely not worth the risk.

Tow it to the dealer. Definitely not worth risking the car. Check under the hood for steam or any coolant leaks.

Did you take a picture of the warning? Could be a number if things. It's under warranty, call BMW (your dealership) and tell them to come pick it up and bring you a loaner. Dontbwant to mess around with temp issues.

Yep, dealer knows and car is being towed there tomorrow...just worried if the damage has already been done. Haven't seen this on the newer M2's yet, even trying to find similar on the X3M or M3/M4 boards, but nothing really comes up unfortunately.

highly doubtful there would be any damage. never hit the red or the overheating warning. it was just "too warm".

I checked the left side of the engine reservoir...filled perfectly to max. Where is the other reservoir?

Checked the other, not at max, but not at min either, so one full to max, other above min.

Turns out it was the temperature sensor...resistance is too high, so reading is way off. CEL though was noting the coolant temperature was too low.

There is also a recall on the M2 DME software. They've not published it yet.

Dealers call everything a recall.

Details about the SIB for the DME are in several threads here.

Glad the solution for your car was simple!

Exactly. I called my dealer out when they emailed, called and texted me about it. They had a manager respond to apologize and correct but when I played along and asked what does the update do...🦗🦗🦗

Either way...they originally said the DME update would fix the issue, but it didn't (found out 20 minutes down the road lol). Waiting now to hear if the temp sensor was the issue.

Haven't seen this issue on any boards for the S58 engine, so hoping this is useful to someone else in the future.
