iDrive 8.5 compatible device list

BIMMERPOST

Does anyone know whether BMW has compiled a list of compatible bluetooth devices that can be paired with the iDrive 8.5 system on a 2025 M2? Both BMW genius and my dealer have told me that, as far as they are aware, only phones can be paired. I find it hard to believe if true. What would be the rationale for this limitation?

Has anyone ever been able to successfully paired a device that is not a phone?

I've never seen a full device compatibility list, but you can pair devices that are not phones via Bluetooth and USB. Its functionality will be limited to iDrive, only iOS devices support CarPlay and only Android devices support Android Auto.

Well, according to my BMW dealer, only phones can be paired, not other devices.

I am trying to pair via bluetooth my Sony digital audio player (not a phone) to the car. While the iDrive and the device do recognize each other (the same code shows up on both the device and the iDrive screen), the iDrive refuses to connect.

I am just trying to verify whether this pairing limitation as stated by the dealer is really true (because it doesn't make any sense). Hopefully, someone somewhere has successfully paired a non-phone device.

I've paired an older iPod touch to an older version of iDrive before. Although it's not a phone it does run iOS which might be why it worked. I've also seen that sometimes you need to play with toggling Bluetooth on/off on your device for it to successfully connect to iDrive. If your DAP has USB I'd recommend using that. It's much better than using Bluetooth since USB will keep the device charged, faster device response/playback and there's no transcoding of audio since iDrive can play almost every standard audio format... MP3, M4A, M4B, AAC and FLAC.
