2006 M3 vs 2009 Infiniti G37

Finally going to let my 1996 Nissan 300Z go. Great car but long in the tooth and need a back seat now that I have 2 little kids. Debating between a certified pre-owned 2006 M3 convertible 6MT with 23715 miles vs a new '09 Infiniti G37 sedan automatic with sport package. Will use as a daily driver, kids in car on weekends only. Vert has 19" wheels, heated seats, HK sound, Nav. Leaning towards M3 but a little concerned about maintenance on it. I tend to keep my cars a long time. (My Z has 113K miles on it). Price will be similar, probably a bit more for the M3, especially if I wait till the 2010's are out on the G37. Any thoughts, comments would be greatly appreciated.

The G37S is a great ride! I would go for the 2009 any day over a 2006 M3. Don't forget the warranty issues..at least with the G37 you are covered.

My opinion, is that the G37 is more refined than the 2006 M3 and will probably outperform it as well (or at least close in performance).

However, the G37 wins hands down in interior cabin amenities, technology, style and comfort.

I owned a 2005 G35 Coupe (6MT, Sport Package) and a 2004 FX35 SUV..Infiniti makes a great car.

I would rather have the G37S than the E46 vert.

Personally I will take the m3 because I like the rush feeling and the look.

But the truth is the g37 sedan is a better daily driver. It is much more comfortable, more room, more reliable, and better tech. Not to mention lower maintenance. For you, i say g37.

Thanks for the input. My brain says definitely go with the G37 but my heart is telling me to look at the M3 vert. Drove the G37 with paddle shifters - handles well, good acceleration, fun. Going to drive the M3 tomorrow.

I feel that you'll be much happier with the brand new '09 G37 Sedan. Don't forget to get the 'Sport' version.

OK I gues the votes are in. Went to drive the M3 today and they had it buried behind 10 cars in the showroom even though I called ahead. They actually called me back before I drove over there from Malibu and said come on in, I would be able to drive it. They did not even attempt to pull it out for me. They wanted to "talk numbers first" Thanks but no thanks. In short Beverly hills BMW really sucks ass. Disappointed I did not get to drive it but gave it a thorough look over. Honestly, the car would have had to blow me away performance wise for me to choose it over a new G37. Too bad it did not get the chance. Anyway, thanks to all for the input.

Is a G37 an entirely different car compared to the G35?

G35 is an OK car for the money but I wouldn't pick it over an M3.

The steering and feel of the car is horrible. Brake feel was so-so at best. Are these significantly changed in the G37?

Notice I haven't said a thing about how "fast" it is... I did like the acceleration at least and I think it is a decent looking car.

If driving feel and sport factor aren't as much of a concern, you can disregard this post.

Thanks again for the input. Getting a platinum graphite G37, sport, premium, nav, graphite interior for invoice minus $300 and $2500 rebate. Picking it up in 2 days. I am sure it won't be a track car but should be fun nonetheless.

you are compaing apples to oranges.

06 M3 is a very reliable car..much better then the previous years..

I would get a 06 m3 ZCP

the end...

ive driven the G's a lot, and i dont like the car, the steering feels sux, interior is very cheap, and looks are not for me at all...

I'm always more partial to new cars vs picking up a used one.

He's right, if you're seriously considering the G37, you have got to go with the S. You seem to appreciate sports cars, so don't disappoint yourself with the base model. You will end up missing the extra HP.

G37S is a logical decision

E46 is an emotion decision

Good luck...

e36? sure.
sir, with all due respect, i am not sure you know what you're talking about and here's why
1. G's ship with only one engine, no HP loss/gain with or without sports package
2. I am not sure how you got to E46 M3 > G37. maybe it's your opinion, maybe because you own one, but there's about 5 years generational difference. i am sure the G is superior to the E46 in certain areas/technologies, and i am also sure the M3 has an edge on the G in other areas
3. The G37 sedan with 7AT is pretty close to the E46 M3 performance. look the car up, it's not a slow car. The previous generation G's was E36 M3 level. there's a fat chance new gen G is on par with E46

I know i would go for the E46 M3 if i was facing the same decision, but it definitely will be an emotional decision and mostly based on looks and my M-badge-whoreness

^ Well said.

Don't underestimate the new G37 Sedan. It has the performance to back it up.

It's most likely not what I'd choose for myself, but it certainly has my respect.

I did not know that! Wow, so it is mainly active rear steering that separates the S from the regular G37?
2. I am not sure how you got to E46 M3 > G37. maybe it's your opinion, maybe because you own one, but there's about 5 years generational difference. i am sure the G is superior to the E46 in certain areas/technologies, and i am also sure the M3 has an edge on the G in other areas
Sure, each car is better in certain ways and I think you hit the nail on the head defining the technology as a serious benefit in the G. I, however, was simply agreeing with Bimmer Loyalist that I too would choose a G37 over the e46M3 vert, but I would NOT choose the G37 over the E46 M3 coupe simply due to the emotional fact that I, like you, respect the M badge and performance more than I probably should. Hence, the E46 M3 COUPE > G37 simply based on my preference for raw performance.
3. The G37 sedan with 7AT is pretty close to the E46 M3 performance. look the car up, it's not a slow car. The previous generation G's was E36 M3 level. there's a fat chance new gen G is on par with E46
I must admit, I do not know much about Infiniti, however, I had read this article which gave me the impression "the G37 is definitely a superior model that outshines its predecessor in many ways (except performance)." Initially, this surprised me considering the G35 was running 0-60 around 5.7 but then I turned my eye to this article explaining the improved 0-60 times of the G37 which is in fact comparable to the e46 M.
Thanks for the information

The E46 you're looking at is already 3 years old and wear & tear items will start to surface. Maintenance and long-term wise I think the G may suit you better.

I have an '08 G37S, and absolutely LOVE the car. Alot of fun to drive, and best of all comes fully loaded with everything you need. Really a great car for the money. The only car I can think of replacing it with is an E92 M3. I actually chose the G37S over a 2006 M3 Competition Package. Just preferred the newer, more refined car.
