Grrrrr....windscreen

Okies,

Wifey was driving to work this morning and *POP*, windscreen cracked right across the whole thing.

Bumper to bumper traffic so it wasnt a stone, must have just been a wee flaw or chip that sharted itself in the crazy cold we had this morning.

Anyway, she phoned me and i got her to get straight on to the insurance.

I told her that she must INSIST on a genuine BMW screen but she phoned me back all upset cos the insurance company was just saying "no way", "you are only covered for 150 or so" and "you arent entitled to that, if you want that you pay"

So I'm quite furious to be honest.....

I have spent a bomb putting nothing but genuine BMW stuff in this car, service items, brakes etc etc rather than skimping on aftermarket crap adnd now these dicks are refusing to replace our windscreen like for like?

I have promised to give them a colourful call tomorrow but was wondering what arguments you guys reckon i could use to demand on OEM one?

I dont have auto lights or wipers so thats out of the mix.

Any and all advice appreciated chaps

Thanks
Andy

I'd find out if there are any actual difference between the BMW OEM and the Aftermarket screen first. Without that I wouldn't think you'd have much of an arguement. I can't see them being much different anyway tbh especially no worries without auto wipers etc.

I took a chunk of debris on the M4 last week and my car is in a BMW bodyshop having the front spoiler repainted and the windscreen replaced. The guy who did the estimate told me that if an aftermarket windscreen is fitted by a windscreen company, the existing BMW warranty will be invalid against any future leakages. He said it has to be a BMW OEM windscreen that is fitted

Check with your dealer but Im pretty sure they would only use one of these windscreen repair companies themselves.

You can't make your insurance company put in a genuine screen, unfortunately, although you can pay the balance to do so I guess. That said, they are generally made by Pilkington anyway and will be identical, it just wont have the BMW logo on the corner.

If you have a rain sensor on your car, just make sure they don't stuff it up when they remove it!

I am not sure that is strictly accurate...

Any replacement part must meet with "their approval". And as BMW don't actually make parts (they just screw them together to make a car) I'm pretty sure that a Pilkington screen, who are an OEM for BMW would be acceptable.

Absolutely. The insurance company is obliged to fit OEM parts, not necessarily bearing the customer logo.

What was said earlier
Use the "My vehicle warranty will not be valid if it's not a BMW approved fitment" card - that should suffice. If not, get in touch with your BMW dealer and see if they are able to suggest what windscreens are recommended or approved

Wishing your daughter health

Most call handlers at insurance companies will more than likely wobble at the first hurdle so if you tell them that BMW said your warranty is invalid without a BMW stamped screen then most will just capitulate and authorise it.

If you tell them that they are voiding a BMW warranty I don't reckon many would stick to their guns.

No, they'd just tell you that you aren't voiding your warranty in the first place.

Screw it......

Just told them to put whatever they wanted in and if i wasnt happy id be on the phone to them.

I also told them that I would rather it was at least a good brand such as pilkington and they said it should be.

So we will see

More important things in lfe eh...

Well, National did it and as expected, its utterly shite.
  • The seal down the entire left hand side of the screen is stuck behind the screen instead of in front.
  • There are gaps at the top of both corners of the screen
  • The windscreen makes a terrifying cracking noise when driving.
  • At motorway speeds the windscreen sounds like a tin whistle

My wife told me that they took about half an hour.......which seems somewhat short to me. It takes me that long to clean the windscreen properly ffs. I sat in my office one day and watched Autoglass take around 3 doing an E92. Bet that was done right.

So, going to phone them today and fckn open the taps on them.

I do not need this shit right now, you'd think they would be a bit more cautious given the obvious concerns I raised about generic glass but no, they obviously saw my wife and thought they would just botch it.

Assholes

Just been out to get the ready for the week ahead after all 13" odd inches of snow we've had over the last week. Went to clean the screen and found a 9" crack in the screen, Phoned Autoglass and booked up for a new screen. They said the replacement will be identical as the one coming out but without the BMW logo. The new screen will have a lifetime guarantee. Fitting will be next Saturday and it will take two hours.

That was my experience - insurance company sent out autoglass took about 2 hours. The glass has BMW logo and is spot on - no issues.
