The further you go down the model line the more things bean counters cut. Predictable.

Well that was quick!

I guess I have a new job for today.

BTW for the weight-weenies out there, the Zunsport Oil screen comes in at 650grams.

It also comes with a 'Loyalty' card that gives you 15% off your next purchase.

(Yes, it's steak night tonight!)

OK, missed this earlier, but this is a good data point. One thing to consider though, is that OP's car was likely traveling at highway speeds (70-80+ mph) when this happened. Good to see the cooler is just fine being impacted by small debris at lower speeds (like on the mountain roads).

I think it's extremely hard to engineer cars. Look at Audi LOL they put the battery on the floor of the car (passenger side), and the fuse box is under the dead pedal... All areas prone to water leak, in parts you don't want water.
You lost me at Audi.

Not sure I buy the "bean counters" version as much all the time. I think a thermodynamics engineer would be more than happy or voicing his opinion on not having flow restrictors over radiators, which could trap leaves and shit and clog them up further.

I guess I'm trying to say that it could be the engineers design to have the cars be run like these, where "bean counters" (hate the derogatory term) were actually pushing for a cover to protect from warranty expenses that could potentially outdo the savings of small parts (especially if they're prone to class-action lawsuits).

I don't know.
What I was referring to was not the placement of the oil cooler but the lack of any protection. And, when you look at the M240i with ZCP it doesn't even get the plastic trim that the M2 has. Also, a bean counter is not derogatory any more than calling someone a penny pincher, cheapskate, etc. Don't believe everything you see on the Interwebz.

Merriam-Webster: bean counter

Yes the vehicle warranty remains the same, but that doesn't necessarily mean replacement parts fall under the new vehicle warranty. OP needs to confirm.

Did you buy this one? Trying to decide is I go sunspot, or pay 3x for Mishimoto.

Done.....and done!

Total install time about 20-minutes.

Perfectly suitable for the task at hand.

Thanks to the OP for putting the fear of God in me!

My concern is that it is too close to the cooler now? What did the manual say?

The installation instructions are vague and the pictorials are poor.

Mounting the shield tabs over the 'tongue' would have deformed them when fastening in place.

Sandwiching the tabs under the 'tongue' makes for a more secure installation and still provides about 1/2-inch of spacing between the shield and the oil cooler.

Note that I added one additional screw midway.

Replacement parts/accessories installed by the dealer carry the remaining warranty of a new vehicle.

But yes, confirming with dealer is never a bad idea, after all, they're the ones who will help or give you a hard time after the fact.
I don't want to disagree but from what I can find it says only parts replaced under warranty carry the remainder of the factory warranty. Genuine parts not replaced under warranty carry a 2-yr, unlimited mileage warranty.

Yeah that is specific to accessories. The screenshot I posted was from bmwusaservice.com and specifically said replacement parts. It even mentioned turbos. I also found something from the NHTSA that also said replacement parts installed by BMW technicians have a 24-month, unlimited miles warranty.

If the 2-year warranty is true, if I were the OP I request insurance factor in the cost of an extended warranty now that he may miss out on 2 years of coverage as well as diminished value. That may put him over the threshold to have it totaled - which would be the best outcome, imo.

I doubt it is, though, as it makes no sense… but anything is possible.

Car had a part. BMW replaces the part. New part only has 2 years instead of 4 (albeit with unlimited mileage). Why? Same car, same part. Should carry the same warranty. Who paid is irrelevant.

Their disclaimers are very specific about the 2 years because it’s more likely for you to replace a part out of warranty paying for it yourself, and thus, getting a new warranty.
They’re also specific about the warranty not extending the original period, which has happened before: say, car has 3 years and 11 months, gets a new engine, new engine has 1 month of warranty only, so they’re specific about it so people don’t complain and fight because logic would tell you it should at least have the 2 year warranty, but it doesn’t.

We’ll see what happens here. Cheers!
I agree it doesn't make sense. I just looked at my paperwork for parts replaced on my '22 330e by an authorized BMW dealership. I had a headlight and fog light replaced that were damaged by a kicked up tire tread. My paper work says all replaced parts are warranted for 1 year and unlimited miles. They were replaced with brand new OEM parts.

My dealer did this for me exactly the same. Its a better more rigid installation and allows space as well. This is worth considering for those who have it installed or will do so soon.

I purchased this cooler guard about a month ago. I haven’t installed yet, car is in the shop for ppf. But its first on my list when it gets back. Here is a video from the owner in FL who makes them.

I would't put anything carbon fiber underneath the vehicle. That $1k piece will be damaged in no time. I'd also be concerned with airflow to the cooler with the openings facing the rear of the vehicle.

The only thing that needs to be covered is the cooler opening, the rest of the underbody is covered already. Unless you're taking the M2 off-roading, the "skid plates" are unnecessary.
