Anyone here know sport bikes?
I've got an 05 GSXR 600 with 17k and had it in to have the valves adjusted last week, 3 were out of spec and had to get shimmed. After shelling out a pretty penny for the work I get it back and now it's running like shit. I have more power but if you rev it up past 6k'ish and then let off the throttle it kills and I'm also getting a lot of popping from the exhaust. I should have done my research when finding a shop because when I took it back to see if they knew what was up the service manager tried to explain that it was probably time to have them check out the carbs... GSXR's have been fuel injected since 2000 so I really don't want them touching my bike again. I don't know much about the bike I just like riding it. Wondering if anyone here has any knowledge on bikes because I don't need another forum consuming my life.

I will occasionally do some minor DIY services on my toys, but I am no mechanic.
When it comes to the bike, I would definitely recommend taking it to a reputable service center for big jobs like that. They may be a bit more pricey when compared to smaller local shops, but it's true that you get what you pay for sometimes. When having some two wheeled fun, I wouldn't chance experiencing some sort of mechanical failure that can cause you to go down or get into a collision, just to save a few bucks or a bit of time by experimenting with a local shop you're unfamiliar with. For major repairs or services, I recommend taking her to a certified service center. Stay safe out there. Rubber side down, always.

Reads like your timing is off or the valves weren't shimmed properly.
Tell me more about the shop? GSXR Forum guys are pretty sharp - worth the effort. Or at least bikes are simple enough that your symptoms will clue into the problem. |

Well, first off, did you have any symptoms before that you decided to go in check valve clearance or just doing regular maintenance?
Did this bike have a lot of track time / racing? What do you mean by having more power, bike barely moves before 6k rpm? I would suggest GSXR forums as well, as you can even DIY this in your garage. Have 07 gsxr 750 with 22k miles and runs like a champ, so will not be checking / adjusting valve clearances just yet. |

I would guess when they removed one/both cams to shim the valves, they put it back in slightly off which will affect the timing. I would recommend either the service manual or a good google search for checking cam timing for a DIY approach. Here's a pic I found on the webs

Easier said than done having them pay the bill at another shop. Great idea in theory, but you're talking months of small claims court.

I have money on cam timing being off. Shim under bucket means they had to pull cams and I can almost guarantee the timing is off by a tooth.
That is also why power is up....it moved the power band due to the change in cam timing. God I hate taking my stuff to "experts"!!!!!!

You can do your valves yourself. It's REALLY not hard. The hardest part will be ordering the shims you need. People on GSXR forums or facebook groups will have all the DIYs and advice you need to accomplish the task. You will ideally want a service manual too, although other people can give you the procedures and tolerances.
As a motorcyclist I cannot recommend having other people work on your bike unless you literally trust them with your life. |
