Sunroof Delete on M240i

Has anyone heard when/if an M240i can be ordered without a hole in the roof?

In the US the sunroof is also standard on the 230i, but there is the option to delete it. Right now there is no option to delete it on the M240i. Not sure why BMW has made the sunroof delete 230i only at the moment.

The M240 is already a porker, I guess BMW didn't figure like anyone would want a lighter car.

I'm waiting for the RWD M240i sans a hole in the roof. For me that's non-negotiable.

You might have to hold out for an M2, maybe with CF roof. That'd be nice.

I'm really surprised the US gets the sunroof as standard and in the UK we get it as a option.

I wonder who makes these decisions sometimes 🤷🏽*♂️

I think in US you can check a sunroof delete option... I am 99% sure I saw that while doing my Build order back in October

Only for the 230i (like mine!), and the previous M240 (RWD at least) you could opt out on the roof...but not the current M240 X Drive.

I too am hoping for an M240 RWD without the roof!...or an M2, but for now I am digging my 'slick roofed' 230 M Sport.

Would be nice if we could get rwd, sunroof delete and the upgraded headlights as a stand alone option.

I would not purchase any vehicle without moonroof.. It lets light in plus can be just popped open for bit of fresh air or opened more. Don't understand why some don't want a moonroof. This is not a race car & 99.9% of folks will never track a vehicle

I have yet to open the sunroof of my 2er, X1, or Mini; fortunately I did manage to get my Club Sport built without a hole in the roof. If you want one have at it.
Being an HPDE instructor I suppose I'm part of that 00.1%.

Totally agree. The carbon roof on some M cars has a cool factor for sure but would rather have a sunroof any day.

Well, lemme explain the "no roof" perspective. Now, for me, I am tall, so the added headroom is critical, but if I were 5'6" I would not want one as I don't find any of the benefits appealing...which is a purely subjective matter; like one's favorite color. The downsides to a moonroof are cost and performance-based issues. They cost money, they can break, and they add weight (in the worst place...high). I'd argue, in some cases they compromise some chassis rigidity too.

My 230i, for example, has the roof delete. Saved me $800, some weight, provides more headroom, and I'm not in need/want of the fresh air and sunlight. Win-win-win for me.

I get they are wildly popular, and help with resale, but I like what I like, and can be pretty particular...like many owers on these forum, I bet. In the end, I don't like moonroofs, or those panoramic roofs either. I agree my benefits are miniscule for heavier sedans like and M340, 540, M550 (some of my preferred BMWs). And, for those, I'm stuck with a roof...but an M3 or M5? I'll take it.

Headroom for tall people is about the only logical argument I feel is sound.

However, if you're 6ft or under, the extra sunlight let in actually makes the interior FEEL much bigger, even if you lose 1.5 inches in height or whatever.

The weight is irrelevant for 98% of owners that are not hardcore track enthusiasts. The $800 is savings drops the value by $1K or more too.

Panoramic sunroofs on SUV's and such are a whole other story. Driving through dense skyscrapers as a passenger in my buddy's Tesla X was an experience, like on a professional tour or something.

Headroom is the ONLY logical reason that is sound??? The performance characteristic, which you confirmed, is not sound? $800 savings is not a sound argument? Oh, and these things don't break?

But driving in the big city, staring at the pretty tall buildings is logical sound reason for a moonroof?? I totally appreciate your reason for digging moonroofs, and you're in the majority opinion, but not liking moonroofs is also a logical, sound choice too, no?

I admit I care less about moonroofs on large trucks and SUVs, both being massive and tall, with lots of headroom, but a small performance car...it matters for sure.

I'm sorry, my friend, we'll just agree to disagree; and that's totally okay.

NO mention of sunroof/moonroof controls in manual? I downloaded the manual for my M240i from the BMWUSA site, supposedly specific to my VIN, but it is just a generic 2 series manual. Perhaps it's just me, but i can find no mention or reference to that sunroof in the manual. I checked the index and found no listing for sunroof or moonroof, perhaps BMW gives it some esoteric name, but i browsed the manual and can see no reference.

So they give us no option to get rid of the dam thing, and yet don't even mention it in the manual???? If i am wrong please someone direct me to pages/section in the manual.

thanks

It's not in the downloadable pdf manual but is in the electronic online manual. Still seems weird that it is not mentioned in the umteen page pdf manual.

Question for drivers here with track experience, is sunroof delete even noticeable outside the track setting?

It would be very very difficult for me to get a car without a sunroof. It adds so much to the ambiance of the cabin and my enjoyment of driving. I open mine daily unless it's too hot out or I'm on the highway.

This is how we use the sun roof on ours.

Just one interjection here, M340i weighs about the same as the M240i. Heck, it's easier to justify the M340i's weight versus the M240i. The 2'er here is the real pig when comparing the utility of the these two.

As someone who's contemplating a RWD 240 to replace my RWD M340i. I am still hesitant in accepting the fact that a car this small will only give me about a 100lb advantage while sacrificing the sedan's utility. As for sunroofs, I don't use them and would gladly accept a car without one.
