VW 282 mpg car in 2010

Too bad it looks like a spaceship..

The 1-Liter car has been around in prototype form since 2002 and greens everywhere have been drooling at its 282 miles per gallon fuel economy (or 1 liter of gasoline per 100 kilometers, hence the name). VW has finally decided to make more and sell them, and a limited edition (estimated in the thousands) should start selling in 2010.

It is actually a very cool looking car, although it has more in common with a motorcycle that is covered with a carbon fibre body.

I doubt it will met American safety standards. Especially with side impact crash testing.

I can't decide whether it's a Honda Insight, a train, an airplane without wings, or a flying saucer the moment it warps into hyperspace.

I know one of the logic elements from Honda was that when they put Hybrid motors on their regular cars like the Accord or Civic and the only difference is the badge it isn't enough of a change because people want to be seen that they are using a hybrid. This is one of the reasons they canned the Accord hybrid and are developing a standalone vehicle.

They also don't want to make this standalone better looking than their bread and butter cars because well, it would cut into those sales as well.

You know this is starting to really anger me. Why is it that all the great really fuel efficient cars have to looks so odd? Why can they just put that engine into a golf or something? I honestly would have bought this car if it actually got 282 mpg and it looked like an actual car. I mean look at the tesla. It is electric and looks like normal car. Too bad that's really expensive.
