Would you buy a new diesel in 2023 (X5)?

So I'm looking at the X5, where I am all the X5s are diesel. Not interested in the LCI that has M60i, not interested in X5M.

Is it crazy to even think about the quad turbo M50D in 2023? Diesel is polluting (possible penalty in the future?), price gone crazy, maintenance etc?

Please tell me not to look at it.

Emissions system related repairs can become very expensive. Diesel passenger cars are dying in the US because of tighter emissions regulations and a crackdown on emissions deletes.

B57S has been discontinued - no quad turbo diesel anymore
I would still get it (used) if I can.

Please ignore all whining about diesel emissions repairs here in US:
- the US BMW diesel footprint is tiny
- majority US BMW shops has petrol experience only
- pretty much no one read-the-manual (SCR system)

The BMW SCR is fixable, fairly easy (and cheap) at least if you "think" that you know how it works

The SCR2 (N57x/B57x) is solid/reliable, especially when compared to original SCR in M57Y

I've owned multiple diesel cars but my wife's current will be our last. The repairs are simply mind blowing in cost. No matter what it's a min of 2k everytime. Usually I can tackle most auto repairs but not on it. Also diesel seems to be more expensive, sometimes by a dollar per gallon in winter. My A8 is cheaper to drive most times. The mpg really isn't that great any longer with what normal gasoline powered engines can achieve. Not to mention the added initial expensive of the diesel "upgrade". You HAVE to keep the car for quite a long time to see any benefits as well. One last thing is the pain of having to wait for diesel pumps at some stations, or finding diesel, plus the diesel fuel smell gets on your hands.

I’ve spent a few days each driving the F15 x5 M50d (triple turbo) and G07 X7 M50d (quad turbo), and they were very impressive.

That said, they are undeniably complex engines.

If I was buying a G05 X5, I’d be buying an xDrive40i (B58 petrol). Excellent performance, good economy and a very good rep for reliability. Helps that it’s still a current engine too.
