M2 damaged in transport

CA just notified me that the rear bumper was damaged somewhere along its journey to the port. I’m told the bumper is being replaced at the VPC. Has anyone else experienced something similar before?

Apparently if I decide to take delivery (after I inspect it), I have to sign something acknowledging that I’m aware of the damage. Not sure if there’s more to it, like some sort of waiver.

Will this sort of damage show up on a carfax? Anything that would affect the resale would be a nonstarter.

Personally I wouldn’t take that car.
Knowing my brand new car got damaged and had a replace bumper would irk me, but that’s just me.

Order a 2025. They start orders this month. Ask for a discount for your bad time also.

I'd ask what kind of damage & how it happened. Could just be something scraped it & damaged the plastic enough it has to be replaced. Ask if you can see pics of the damage. If it looks like it rolled into something & it's all smashed up, I wouldn't take the car, either. But if it's just cracked & has to be replaced, no big whoop.

I doubt transportation damage is reported to carfax. Accidents are for sure.

Don't sweat it too much till you get eyes on it when it arrives. The car isn't even transferred to dealer until after VPC there will be no report at all, VPC addons or work are still considered factory. VPC uses all factory OEM and are trained to handle this daily, people would be super surprised how much work they do before the dealer see's it. I'm actually more shocked the dealer even told you other than bc the arrival date would be moved back a bit. In regards to signing something never heard of that and would read it in depth before you buy as well. That part seems shady too me and I've had a couple orders see damage never once signed a paper for a factory repair. Almost seems shady there like it isn't actually VPC work but dealer work...... I'd deep dive that.

It's still a brand new M car & these things happen at the VPC. My $85 + K X3 MC had a rear bumper that got bumped at the same time in the same location as yours. They had to read me the disclaimer before I signed on the dotted line. Guess what, the value of my car never went down a single sent & still runs mid 11's bone stock in factory fresh trim. Enjoy the car & you'll never notice it. Life is too short to keep looking back.

Wonder if there's any way to know how the new bumper would be painted? Would they receive a primed bumper at the port and paint it in their shop? Or would it be painted at the factory with robots like in normal assembly?

I'd probably just go find another allocation somewhere else. Just in time for MY25.

But if you are considering it, this is what I'd ask the CA

- Send me a picture of the damage.
- Who is repairing it?
- What is the overall delay to receiving the car?
- What kind of discount are you offering?
- What rights am I waiving when I sign?

Get a new car or ask for $10K off or at least $5K off.

Wait until you see it.
If resolution is acceptable, ask your CA for a BMW store (gear/parts) gift card.
Start at $1K and settle for whatever makes you smile.

Appreciate the insight from everyone so far. Car is Black Sapphire Metallic, so maybe that’s easier to match than others… guess we’ll see.

I think the only reason they disclosed this to me was because I sent an email threatening to back out because the vehicle was delayed at VPC for so long.

Discount might help. But not sure how much they really offer as they’d probably move this pretty quickly without a disclosure to the next guy.

Tricky situation because I really just want something fun to drive now. Don’t plan on holding onto the car much past 2 years. Will move onto something else. Just don’t want future resale affected.

If I had to wait for a new build, I’d probably just move onto a 911.

If the damage is cosmetic and it is a factory painted bumper I wouldn’t make an issue of it except for the inconvenience, there is that store credit idea. If any real damage or if painted not on the factory then it’s a different discussion based on how it looks.

Don’t sweat it. It’s a new car, there won’t be paint match issues. It’s a plastic bumper that will take them no time to switch out. It won’t show on Carfax. Enjoy the car.

I dont think you will see any pics if it happened at vpc or in transit. Only pics if it happened at dealer.
So same thing happened to mine in fall 23. I was told scratches on bumper so they would replace anyway. No you wont have any carfax, there is no record of the car yet. There shouldnt be any issue. All vpc’s have full time body and paint shops for stuff like this. There are plentynof ferraris and porsches that get fixed or painted panels at vpc from transport damage. Cars will come in and you’ll never know but at least nice they told you. Depending on the state they have to disclose. Im NY and disclosure would only be for xx% of damage to car but might be different in other states. Since they are doing new bumper anyway i wouldnt worry about it. Tbh i forgot it even happened to mine within days of taking delivery.

It's just a bumper and BSM is one of the easier paints to match.

Paint matching¡

It is always difficult to get an exact match between the paint on a bumper and the paint on the body of the car, especially when the bumper is painted at a different time and in a different place and with a different batch of paint. The difficulty is compounded if the paint is metallic or pearl because you need to get the flakes lined up the same way The real issue is that the paint mismatch may not show up for several months. I accepted delivery on repainted bumper and I’m really sorry that I did. I had to get the bumper repainted two more times after that and the paint still did not match exactly.

Lol, he's not getting a discount. They disclosed the damage and are repairing it before he takes delivery. This happens all the time, most times the damage is not disclosed unless required in that state. He can either purchase the vehicle or not, but he's not entitled to a discount.

it happend upon delivery of my 23 last year.
it wont show on the carfax.
they dealer didn'T offer anything...
they told me it could take months to fix the car so i refused the car (it was in august) and ordered a 24, which i received before the 23 was fixed!

if it's a quick fix and you don't miss the summer with your car i don't see why you should wait

I will say it's taken almost two months for me to get a new rear bumper. Originally ordered in April then last month was told by that dealer it was unavailable & they canceled my order. Ordered through another dealer on 5/29 & it is currently in transit to my house with a scheduled delivery Friday. Maybe the dealer will have better luck getting a new bumper more quickly.

As another individual stated, the repair may look good initially, but a year or two down the road, whether you sell it privately or you trade it in, the repair may be visible at that point.

If you are planning on ordering a new 992.2, you will likely be looking at a very long wait time and potentially some pretty healthy ADMs.
