Reading all the posts on G87 M2 exhaust (s) is downright exhausting (pun intended).
My new 2025 M2 has me confused, can't get a handle on real engine noise and how to control it vs ASD which I want to avoid.
In my M1 and M2 buttons I have turned off ASD but is there a flap operated exhaust system that activates under certain settings?
Do the drive modes activate ASD in some amount?
I've trolled the forum and google but cannot find a good explanation of the overall system, is there something out there?

Full disclosure: I don't own an M2 yet

From what I understand, there is an exhaust flap but it is never fully open (even in sport settings). That's why people here get a valve controller to fully open the exhaust flaps.

The "M Sound" setting is for computer generated car sounds through the car audio. I had no idea until I realized what it was....and therefore once it was off, how quiet the stock exhaust on the car really is.

My understanding is that the "Sport Plus" Engine mode does several things; one of which is open the stock exhaust valves. But they're never fully open past 75% i think it is. And I've also heard that those valves adjust with speed as well. It's also possible that the "M Sound" becomes more pronounced when you change engine modes.

I know Dahler makes a separate exhaust valve controller kit to force the valves open to 100%. I want more sound so I'm going full stainless Valvetronic exhaust....really hope I like it.

The M modes do more than just open the valves they also adjust the throttle sensitivity and traction control to whatever you set it at.

Our valve controller can lock the valve from 25-100%.

M sound also activates the obnoxious burble tune for the engine in addition to the ASD sounds coming from the speakers, as well as increased exhaust valve opening.

the valves adjust depending on your RPM, speed, and mode.
If you want full control over the valves, you need a valve controller, it cannot be done just with M1 and M2

to get a real sound, get a valve controller and disable ASD using Bimemrcode or a similar app.

the burble sound is a personal preference that you can keep or also disable if you dont like it

My question is... with the new LCI M2 can you turn off ASD through the settings menu?
I ask because I don't think you can code via Bimmercode in the ID8.5 system. It's been locked.

I have a ‘25 and currently have ASD coded off without issue. It is still possible to do this, though I can’t see any head unit settings in BimmerCode (this might be the limitation you are thinking of).

That said, the exhaust is quiet. I also have a Veloster N and the stock exhaust in that puts this to shame. I bought a dahler valve controller the first week I had the car, but looked at the install and second guessed doing it myself. Just had it installed by a pro and it helps, but I will probably end up with an exhaust at some point - trying to live with it for a year before doing something like that. With the vale’s forced open the car gets throatier and deeper, but it’s a long way from how cackle inducing the power in the car is. This is a car that should put a smile on your face from the sound alone and it isn’t there with just a valve controller.

The longer I have it, the more conscious I am of how much attention this car gets on the road (it’s a lot) and am a little dubious about making it louder. Also have the wife who is not thrilled by ‘go fast’ the way I am and won’t love riding in it if it gets louder… but we have a valved exhaust! I spent some time at the shop that did the work talking through options on exhaust and they suggested mid-pipe/axel-back with a valve would be loud on command, but quiet down to near stock levels with valves closed. I suspect it’s just a question of when I do it, not if.

The exhaust control button next to the gear shift behaves differently in the three engine modes when you toggle it;

1. Efficient - interior piped ASD noise on/off only, no outside change

2. Sport - in addition to interior sound change, exhaust flap opens and exterior exhaust tone changes

3. Sport+ - as with sport, the piped sound deepens, pops/burbles added along with upshift 'farts', flap opens to max (75% open as I understand it) and throttle map adds more rumbles & burbles. This is the loudest it gets.

If all you want is more nose externally without spending $$$ then the simplest solution is to get the car fully warmed up in sport+ with ASD on, then with the engine still running pull Fuse 203. This only supplies the exhaust valve actuator, and the flaps will be fixed at max available opening in all modes.

You can then set up M1/M2 with 'M Sound OFF' and there's no piped exhaust sound any more.

The only time it comes on automatically is on startup in Efficient - easily solved by setting M1 to your preferred daily driving mode and pressing that before you fire it up.

As has been noted by mike above, the only way to get full control of the flaps and 100% opening is by fitting an aftermarket valve controller.
