G42 m240i jb4 map switching options
My friend is purchasing the jb4 for his 20 2023 m240i.
Can the maps on the jb4 be changed with the steering wheel and the dash gauges, or is the Bluetooth module required? |

You either need a Bluetooth/wired connection to a proprietary app, or a mechanical switch on the device itself. |

Thank you sir.
I have the jb4 on my g82... With the BT. He didn't order the BT. At this point, is there any reason to install it without the Bluetooth module available immediately? What does the jv4 tuner default to upon installation? Map 0 i presume? |

Some models support steering wheel control, but the G42 currently does not (don't even know if there are plans for it). So he will need either the bluetooth module or the BMS data cable to be able to change maps and log data.
BT is certainly easier.

If I remember correctly, there's a switch either inside the JB4 box or on the outside that you can use to switch maps. I had the Bluetooth module on my car and would use that to switch maps. I can't remember, the JB4 hardware is so antiquated I'm shocked people still buy them. (Serial port? Really?) Piggybacks don't integrate with the CANbus system, so there is no way to map switching maps to buttons controlled by the car. You'd need to flash your ECU to change what the buttons in the car do. I'm not a JB4 expert, and I owned one and really tried for about 8 months. I was never even able to get comfortable enough to add ethanol to the car. Best time I was able to run was 11.2@118mph if I remember correctly. FWIW, I got a Racechip for my G87 and thing that's probably as good as it gets for a piggyback tuner. Ultimately we ended up unlocking the ecu and running Bootmod3. On my new G87 we're not even messing with a piggyback. Unlocking it and going straight to ECUtek. Good luck. 👍🏻 |

Now technically you are correct that the JB4 does not integrate with the CANbus system, but it monitors it via the OBD2 port. You should absolutely connect your JB4 to the OBD2 connector for best functionality.
