Brake pads for less dust

Hi all! I usually add PowerStop Z23 pads to my performance cars as they are virtually dustless and since they are all just road cars I don't notice a huge performance decrease. The difference is worth it for less dust to me.

Anyway, I tried to look them up for the G87 M2 and they aren't coming up (assuming it's still too new).

My question is, are the M3 calipers and pads the same as our M2? If not, anyone know of some dustless aftermarket pads?

Thanks!

EBC reds but they are hard to find, you'll need to pre-order

Thank you, I do recall in past research that EBC reds are light on dust. I'll give it a look.

Porterfield R4-S is a great option with little to no lead time. This is a very popular street sport pad on the F87 platform.

Hey Mike how would you compare the dust and squeal to the isweep 1500? Both seem to have good feedback but curious how they compare to each other.

I highly recommend Carbotech 1520 pads. I had them installed a few hundred miles ago. After the bedding in process (normal driving and braking for 300-400 miles) I’m experiencing significantly less brake dust (90% less). The residual dust is just a smattering of gray powder which cleans up with a quick wipe. Until the pads mate to the rotors, you will have residual dust from the old pads as well as shedding of the surface coating from the Carbotech pads.

How many miles on the car before swapping pads?

I was also looking at the PowerStop Z23 that OP mentioned as they do make ones that fit my G42.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll look into these as well. Good to see there are so many options.

I swapped my pads at 1300 miles. If you have driven more than 2000 miles with OEM pads, you may want to resurface your rotors to assure proper bedding in.
Powerstop does not offer pads for the G87. I did purchase Powerstop pads for my previous G42 M240i and other performance cars in the past. Great pads at a great price. Good aftermarket carbon pads for the G87 will cost about $600+-. Many are pleased with offerings from i Sweep, EBC (Reds), and Carbotech. I’m very pleased with Carbotech.

Porterfield R4-S and Carbotech 1521 (or if you prefer GLOC GS-1 which is an identical compound) are low dust, low noise performance street pads. If available, the PFC z-rated pad is a low dust, low noise performance street pads; however, they require a little temp before they have good initial bite. Temp resistance is higher than the R4-S and 1521 compounds.

Thank you for this. I will look into the Porterfields. It's just a street car, so all I really care about at this point is little dust as possible.

No problem. I’ve been using Porterfield R4-S and CT 1521 (compound changed once I believe in the early 2000s) pads on the street for ~25 years. The CT 1521 is my go to street pad but they are more expensive than Porterfield R4-S and other street performance pads. The R4-S has a lower initial bite than stock pads but IMO stock pads have an overly aggressive initial bite.

Thank you. Out of the two, which in your opinion creates the least dust? And what is your estimate of the % less dust than OEM pads? Are we talking only 50% less or nearly non-existent like the PowerStop Z23 pads?

Probably the Carbotech 1521. I’d say dust is reduced by > 90%. Here’s a pic of my HRE R43 on my MW e92 M3 after several weeks without cleaning

Edit: not sure why the pic rotated but I can’t fix it

Great, thank you! I'll look more into the Carbotech 1521 then.

I used Carbotechs on two previous M cars, but there are multiple posts and threads about how they rattle on the G8X platform. Very concerning IMO and disappointing since I have recommended their pads in the past. I'd want to confirm that the company properly addressed the issue before ordering.

I may catch some criticism for this but I had CT 1521 on my F87 comp and I thought the build quality of the pads sucked. The backing plate was machined roughly and the rears clicked when changing directions, which is something I knew going in, but they definitely did not care to modify that pad shape to fix it. I bought Brembo NAO pads for my old Mazda the same week and the quality of the pad and hardware were just far superior looking. Also not a huge fan of the fact that they just rivet the friction material in 3 spots right through it.
