I'm not sure what is being done in the process of tuning in your case. When I tuned my E90 it was to shift faster and hold gears longer before downshifting. Same for my X5. I never played with ignition cutouts because that inherently will slow you down and cause turbos to spool down. To keep the car fast you want the turbos spooled up. In a manual you lift the throttle because you can't shift under load. An automatic with ECU programming allows you to keep your foot firmly planted on the throttle and will only cut ignition and fuel for a minimal amount of time.
