I stopped watching out for it after attending SEMA and seeing them release the R8W / R4W line. They might still drop more again but who knows. I did also see Best Buy match the prices woot had for Black Friday though

I have had my R7 up on the windshield (not fully mounted) for a few days now.

I updated the firmware and loaded vortex's recommended settings via USB.

It has not failed to notify me of an actual radar source yet. It has long range in speed sign detection.

The nicest thing so far is that this is by far the quietest detector I have ever used. it never goes off for anything other than speed signs and radar so far. I really like that.

They keep posting it so I don't see why they'd stop as long as they have stock

I'll gladly take the previous model for a huge discount. Like my Garmin lol

As far as I can tell there is no reason to upgrade to the wifi version all it lets you do is avoid plugging in your detector with a USB cable to do updates.

Get the older version for cheaper for sure.

I already bought the detector the last time they had the sale.

That actually would be great since they suck at Mac lol.
I have a small Windows tablet but it super slow and was such a pain to use that to do the update. I can't wait until they update the macOS software. I don't think it is worth it for me to do the upgrade though I am not sure why all these hardware makers can't seem to be up to date with current times. Like why in 2020+ do you still not have a way besides USB to update? Or why you are still on a micro USB, or RJ11 connector?
Like Garmin has a proprietary connector that is the same shape as USB C but slightly different.. and most devices do not have WIFI.

Glad to hear you went with the Vortex settings. I was planning to do the same thing.

I'm excited! Thanks for sharing!

This is the sole use case for the latest R8 having Wifi is to remotely update it without having to take it out of your car haha. I totally feel you here. I'm starting to get in the habit of adding a calendar reminder for one saturday each month just to check for firmware / GPS updates on this thing, but is ridiculous that I'll be doing so in 2025.

Mirror tap was super easy, took 20 mins to do everything pictured. The pins from either harness I bought fit easily into the harness. The RJ11 connector on the Ebay cable was way nicer than the amazon one, so I used that. Ebay metal mount is super stealth on the exterior and works great.

I use vortex radars recommended settings on the latest firmware. I leave it on advanced.

Mounting how IanH did is the way in my opinion.

Hanging under the mirror takes up so much center visual space, it would drive me insane.

I bet you lose some functionality as it's better to be mounted lower, but to me visually it's so much better that the trade-off is worth it.

Awesome, enjoy! Just FYI mine took a while to ship out so if you’re wondering why you don’t have it a week from now it seems like Woot is likely drop shipping these from somewhere else

Where do you find Vortex’ settings? (EDIT: found ‘em)

Argh. Of course the wi-fi model comes out 3 months after I buy my R8. I think I’m going to have to get the W model. Having to dork around with cables and PCs is lame. Just hot-spot it to my phone anytime and done. Always up to date.

Ouch. Be looking for a dirt cheap brand new R8 to go up for sale.

Having to do a software update manually via USB is super annoying. That said the R/TACH app works with my last gen R8 to at least read and modify settings via Bluetooth, so I decided that was good enough for me. I will just keep taking the unit out of my car once every quarter or so to do a quick firmware update.

Also, my dumb ass just realized I can take the crappy windows laptop I use mainly for this firmware update and a couple other car things into my garage, plug it into the R8, and do the software update without taking the R8 out of my car. I don’t know why it took me months to realize this lmao

I bought the blendmount that comes up for the r6 and our cars but I had to snap off the top of the spring finger to get it not to rub on the mirror base. Is yours stuck on with 2 sided tape IanH ?
The blendmount hangs kinda low but I'll see how I like it. If you do the mirror tap for power how do y'all mute it? I feel like I hit that cigarette lighter mute button nonstop when I have other people in the car

Yes, black vhb onto the windshield with the metal mount. My mount location is 90% behind the black dod matrix, hard to see. It does limit the visor tilt angle, but I usually have a hat around while driving so I rarely use my visor in front of my face.

I use the mute button on the side of the detector, it's easy to hit with my right thumb while driving. However, my detector is rarely going off, I've now mapped basically every speed sign I might normally encounter.
