Frozen dark gray matte paint finish question
Hi guys,
Picked up my 1st BMW about a month ago in a matte finish- Frozen dark gray metallic on a 550e. Was a little skeptical due to the amount of care the paint needs but I'm pretty good with keeping my cars cleaned and detailed (OK, maybe I'm even a little OCD ) So i took the car to get ceramic coated this week and the detailer noticed the spotting on the bumper below (and this appears ONLY on the bumper). He didn't coat it and I have an appt with BMW to take a look at it this week. I've only rinsed the car with water, haven't even soaped it yet. We've had lots of road salt down here so I've been trying to keep up on keeping the salt off the car. Car was kept in the garage overnight after coating and then the next day- the spots seem to have disappeared!! Has anyone had this experience before? Paint/clearcoat defect? Pics below. Car is kept in the garage at home as well. |

Can you heat those patches up maybe? It can be moisture trapped underneath the matt clear if not i sure hope that the dealership does a good job refinishing it, but i wouldnt like to do that on a brand new car tbh... im working as a painter in a dealership and the matt colors are a nightmare to match and paint....

It's just on the top of the back bumper? Could it be a residue from a cleaning agent or something else the dealership used to clean the car? Seems like maybe something sat on the paint there. Hopefully you can get it off and definitely go to the dealership to flag for them.

It gets easier with the frozen paint I held my breath for about 3 months . I hand wash but really do contactless foam wash the dirt doesn’t seem to stay on the frozen paint like a gloss and read most swirls are done by the owner washing . You only rinsed I get it . I can’t explain the white dots over my head .. my go frozen paint product is the Jimbo’s detailing hard as shell water based ceramic spray keeps the finish and products so easy to use . After 5 months one thing the frozen is super tough and resilient . Good luck

I've had frozen cars for a few years and haven't seen this.
If it's only down there on the bumper, it's almost as if the car went over some oil spotches. I would wash the bumper with matte-safe soap like Meguiar's Gold and see if the water beads evenly afterward. If not, BMW does sell a chemical decontaminant for frozen paint (which I can't find anymore) that would probably be worth trying. It's good to have on hand because it's the only way to remove deposits; you can't use clay on frozen paint. Charles
