Private Track Days, HPDE's, Autocross Community?
Looking to connect with fellow track day enthusiasts. I am learning all I can about the G87 prior to choosing it as my next track day/weekend toy.
I know it's heavy. Offers 305 square set up. Hoping to learn the basic track bolt ons and any suspension set up recommendations. Recently learned a stage 2 build (bolt on's and tune) would get me started. Suspension stuff seems to be where I need to learn more. Other than Jackie Ding at PhD, I am still seeking a good rule of thumb to follow. Love this forum! I am in Oklahoma/Texas and track COTA, MSR Cresson, Eagles Canyon, Hallett, Heartland Park, and Ozark Inernational Raceway. If anyone around here has a G87, I would love to connect. Thanks for the feedback. |

I will be autocrossing mine for the first time this weekend, will let you know how it goes. No mods as of yet.
I'm not sure what your level of expertise is but I'd recommend first learning how the car behaves stock. Not many people have the skill to use 100% of this car in stock form so planning mods for a car you don't own yet might lead you down the wrong path. Last autoX event I went to a guy in a bone stock F series 230i had one of the fastest times. Also, it's not a square setup from factory, 275/35/19 front and 285/30/20 rear. Ah gotchya. You are much more seasoned than myself then so I'll let others chime in on their experience with tracking the G87. If I think of any mods after the event this weekend I'll drop them here.

I’ve been tracking on and off about 8 years now with an F80 M3, F80 M3 CS, G82 M4 Comp X-Drive and I’m in my 2nd month of ownership with the G87 M2. From my experience M cars don’t need a lot of power mods unless you are drag racing. Weight is its biggest hurtle, and as a result its suspension, brakes, and tires that I mainly concentrate on. First steps are brake pads, and racing fluid, but you probably already know that! Modern M cars need camber plates for anything more than 1-3 track days a year unless you love spending $$$ on tires. The factory suspension is quite capable, but again, the car is heavy, so stiffer suspension will help in the transitions. My G82 had significant bump steer when lowered, so I had SPL Adustable Tie Rods installed on the G87 and IMHO this is a must for any lowered G87. HAS kits like MP and KW maintain EDC functionality, which I like, but KW V3 or V4 and MCS 2-Way coils seem to be popular if you want to go a step further.

I have a thread here around my G87 development on track, mostly at Eagles Canyon.
https://g87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2160968 Sounds like what you're looking for. The car is so capable stock. Tires, camber plates, and you're good to go. I can't imagine needing any more power personally ![]() (I see GT4 listed, have we met at one of the ECR member days?) |

+1 to what Jack said above. Very fast capable car with minimal mods. If you’re already a track nut feel the car out and then spring for a quality coilover, 19x11 wheel set and brake pads. I have a few reference videos around COTA as well if you make it that way

Heck yah guys! Thank you. I sold my GT4. Been out of the track game and trying to jump back in. Got truck and trailer. “JUST ADD CAR”. 😀
I know G87 power is good…..but I need to cheat. Need more power. Got the camber plates, wheels, a brakes, and suspension top of list. Question: A 2019 M2C. Would you buy an extensive track prepped M2C for track work (full CSF, full SPL, 3 sets wheels) vs a new G87 to build out. Is there a preference on less weight and smaller footprint with the M2C? Budget of $50k up front. Nickel and dime as you save up after that. Last edited by Driv200; 02-05-2025 at 05:33 PM.. Reason: Addition |

Hey there- I frequently do ECR, MSR Cresson, G2, and COTA with either Edge Addicts, Apex, or Chin. It looks like G2 is sponsoring their own open track days too. NekoRacing and jacktli_g87 also do some of those tracks. We can forget about LeggoRacing ... he is ditching us for Washington
![]() My G87 is slightly modified. You can see some of it in the track forum or on IG @ G87_43

Entry rotation is really damn good on this car, so much front end grip. But mid corner kinda sucks. So you gotta get rotation done early. Very different from porsche mid-corner rotation + so much traction on exit. I think suspension is probably the highest value here since you can set it up for more early corner rotation + get power down earlier, and then once you get this sorted, that's probably when power can actually benefit this platform imo! For F87 vs G87... imo stock/light mods: G87 > Supra > F87 I love the F87, esp F87C, but I think supra is just a better platform, and more support for it. For unlimited budget/time, right now I think: Supra > G87 ~= F87 Mostly because G87 platform I think still has a lot of development to go, and both supra/F87 platforms have been developed for a long time. Time will tell if the G87 ceiling can surpass Supra. Weight is completely overblown. People also forget that F87 is like ~3600lb, no lightweight. G87 with lightweight battery, exhaust, wheels, drops you down to that ballpark, while fitting wider tires, much stronger cooling (radiators + fluid aren't light!), and much stronger rear end. You pay for the extra grip/speed in consumable cost though ![]() |

Perfectly said about power and focusing on suspension set up. As I dive deep in research, the F & G both struggle for grip and throttle exit. The 2026 M2CXD is going to be a monster! Wish I could wait till then and longer for the MSRP to settle down. So, here’s my list
* 2023 M2 * F87 / Supra * Audi TTRS * 718 Turbo Cayman Few options left for a small/lighter footprint. G87 sure is growing on me. Hence, in this forum. 😀 Last edited by Driv200; Yesterday at 01:02 PM.. Reason: Uodste |

Super curious how the development will go on the M4 xdrive for mtech.
I grew up 15m from that shop and have a soft spot in my heart for the GTA car scene still ![]() TTRS is interesting, but I'm really really interested to see what the new RS3 is capable of. It's got some crazy diff tech, similar to the EVO/FocusRS, plus those 5cyl can make some crazy power. I haven't seen anyone really wheeling these tho. |

I sold my time attack Supra because the g87 was that much better. The only knock is the weight, but it’s still faster with less mods and can take a beating without cooling mods |

Had a 718 Cayman S before the G87. Great car, but sold due to cooling issues. First was VGT overheating leading to limp mode, which I was able to solve, but IAT heat soak was not fun, and when I tried adding a tune, car actually ran slower.
Mid-engine cooling + turbos unfortunately is not super nice on track. Also, attempted to (unsuccessfully) trade this car for LeggoRacing 's old Supra ![]() |

And look at all the money and trial and error we are saving each other with all this experience. Thanks to everyone. I can add some value…. Built a track EVO IX RS. It was special. That’s what got me appointed as the track leader and organizer of track days in my circles. When I got past 640whp, the transmission was a time bomb after every 3 track days. It took a full crew keeping that car together.
Got a 718 GT4 with carbon buckets and carbon ceramics. Full exhaust, headers, etc. Absolute scalpel on track like I had never experienced. Probably should have kept it forever. But not having the turbo tuning potential was frustrating and felt like I couldn’t get any more out of it. Got a C8 and went full bolt ons and track prep with it. Similar mid engine overheating and pulling timing. Sold it. Landed on the first Ioniq 5 N. Loved it. But the limited range of 185 miles got old quick. Awwsome car though. And now the G87 & TTRS are on my watch list. New G87 (that I mod) or fully built TTRS that appears in great shape. ??? Appreciate the M2 vs Supra feedback as I have had a few of them picked out too. Got one track time attack M2C in the mix, but it’s a die hard track build with a license plate. Not sure I want to go that hardcore…..but depends what day it is. |
