And I say claimed at this point since we don't have, in my opinion, an overwhelming number of successes.

I'd point to different (3 series) upper shock mounts (around $100 USD each, IIRC, plus install fee), or aftermarket shocks/suspension (more expensive). Ideally, BMW would issue an official TSB that dealers would actually recognize and use. I'd wager it would be the shock mounts being the cheaper option.

I'd agree with the upper mounts but I know a 100% that my fix works......only 2 other people on this thread have done what I done and both fixed the problem which is a 100% fix rate.

I hope that both solutions work, and I especially hope I won’t have to deal with this problem soon when I get my car, but I’ve heard that not many coilovers are compatible with the active M suspension. Apparently the Bilstein Evo S is compatible, but I heard some complaints that they can bottom out over potholes which would maybe solve the thump only to introduce a different problem.

I can't comment on coilovers as I have only used the exact oem replacement but made by Bilstein and not Monroe.

I got both rear shocks and mounts replaced under warranty, the hollow thunk noise is now completely gone in both modes (Comfort & Sport). Dealer would not tell me which mounts were installed, he just said that BMW instructed him to install different mounts compared to what was installed from the factory. Shocks have the same part and revision number as the car originally came with, mounts look new but there is no part number visible on them.

Wasn't the part numbers on the work order/receipt?

There are no part numbers on there, it just mentions the customer complaint and that rear suspension work was done.

EDIT: Random pictures on Google show that there should be a part number visible on the mount itself, I'll see if I can take a picture of the number.

I would a 100% say its the M340i one from all the previous posts , that's a much better option than what I had to do before I knew about this potential fix but I'm really pleased people now have a way to fix it which is the main thing.

Okay so I installed the Bilstein EVO SEs back in November. This resolved my thump up until about a month ago, it came back a very little bit. No where near as bad but I can hear it on unpleasant roads. This sort of falls into the theory that the shock top mounts may also be to blame (as discussed ad nauseam in this thread). My Bilstein installation re-used the OEM mounts.

I am probably gonna look into the top mounts from the 3er (33-50-6-889-267). I’d hate to throw more money at it, but some online stores have them on sale at the moment.

Has anyone installed them DIY? Curious how hard it may be, seems like the torque spec may be around 50 foot pounds based on previous posts.
