IQ tests are a bit iffy, yes. Measuring intelligence is difficult since there are different types of intelligence and different ways for intelligence to reveal itself. The SAT, though, is pretty good at what it's designed to do, which is to measure how much you've learned and how well you can apply what you've learned. Granted, some people (myself included) are just naturally good test takers, but that doesn't mean you can dismiss the SAT as merely a measurement of how much you can memorize and how much time you spend studying.

I, for one, never studied a single minute for the SAT, never took an SAT prep course, only took the SAT once and was sick with the flu on that day. And I still scored in the 99th percentile. Does that make me some kind of genius? No, definitely not. But it does show that I was able to acquire a lot of knowledge during my high school years, and then apply that knowledge. That is why universities value the SAT; it gives them a simple and concise general measurement of how much you've learned.

It's just an organization. I'm sure there are a handful of members here who qualify for Mensa. That doesn't mean they are any less intelligent than those who joined. We are no better than BMW enthusiasts who do not belong to a BMW forum.

High Intelligence poorly applied or mediocre intelligence well applied, which would you rather be?

Also, intelligence is one thing, psychology is another. Example: Sharon Stone is a proud member or mensa

Yeah, that is what I thought too..

Either way it isn't funny. Haha

I'm not sure they really do look down at other people that much. But yeah, that's a horrible joke. Of the 7 or 8 Mensa member's that I've come across NOT ONE of them ever mentioned they were a member or acted in a fashion that they were better than everyone else. I know that's a really small sample, but it's usually OTHER people that point out that they are card carrying Mensa members. Make sure that it's the actual person acting that way and not just some good old fashioned hatin'. Don't let the few ruin the perception of the many. I'm sure there's holier than thou d-bags a plenty that are members, but there are D-bags everywhere, what else is new ?

Being smart doesn't mean you'll be successful, being strong and fast doesn't mean you'll be a linebacker, etc...

I never thought of trying to join Mensa, but I'm not sure I care that much about intellectuals joining a club to be intellectual with each other. It's not any different to me than the local quilting club. Do they have a mission statement or something? I don't think they're out there just to "be better than everyone else" but I suppose I could be wrong.

I'm sure if I applied myself enough by brushing up on logic puzzles, and worked on my test taking abilities I'd be able to come close if not pass it. Will that mean I don't have to go to work on Monday?

Just like if I started applying myself at quilting, I have enough confidence that in a reasonable amount of time, I'd be able to make a passable quilt, after years of practice, I should be able to make a fantastic one. Most people associate this as an extension of the all too familiar IQ tests, SATS, etc... These people have had years of practice and encouragement in these pursuits, they should be good at them.
