24-70L Lens
I've been wanting to buy an L lens for a while but haven't really been able to want one. I'm getting a good deal for a 24-70 L but am hesitant to buy it as I still shoot with a rebel XSI. I have seen pics of this lens (IQ is AMAZING) but they're all on 5Ds, 30, 40 or 50Ds. I know that this lens is made for a FF camera but will putting it on a crop sensor really be that bad? The pics from the 30/40/50D seemed fine. Won't it just be a little wide? BTW does anyone who has a rebel and this lens have any pics? it would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Doooooooo iiiiiiiiiitttttttt.......
No reason that it won't be great on your Rebel. Right now the limiting factor is probably your existing lens. If you add the L lens, the limiting factor is now likely the Rebel sensor. But the L glass will allow you to fully maximize your sensor's capabilities, as well as allow you to keep the glass if/when you upgrade down the road. With your crop sensor, it will be an equivalent 38mm-112mm zoom. So not very wide to medium telephoto. In all, I think it will still be a very useful range. I saw a Canon 24-70 locally on Craigslist for $1,000. Cheapest I've seen the Nikon version is $1,500. I'm bummed to say the least....

Get a 17-55
The 24-70 is a great lens on Full Frame, but may be too long for a standard "walk-around" zoom on a crop body. The 17-55IS has a better focal length range, is of comparable optical quality, is lighter and cheaper AND has IS, which adds quite a bit to its flexibility.
The only negatives are build quality (the 24-70 is built like a tank), lack of weather sealing and an included hood, and the inability to use a 17-55 on a full frame body when/if you get one. That said, if you're looking for a high quality mid-focal-length walk-around for a crop body Canon, I really think the 17-55 is the best of the bunch. |

+1 to what everyone else said. Do it. It's a top-notch lens. I was sad to give my 24-70 and 50d to my sister for Christmas Lol. She managing fine with the body/lens combo.
You mentioned liking it on the 30, 40, and 50Ds but the crop factor on those is the same as on your rebel, 1.6x so if you felt it was ok on those then it will be ok on yours =]
