Fastest car under 4k
Hey guys, my buddy just totaled his 540i and needs to get a cheap car for a daily driver while he saves up enough for something nicer. His budget is $4000 and he set on having something fast. Please post suggestions or ideas. Thanks!

An e36 M3 in decent shape sells for 6-7K easily... probably out of range. An e36 325i would likely still be over budget. You've gotta have a good chunk of change set aside for maintenance too or else you won't get very far. I'd tell him to look at some of the more popular drift cars... 240SX etc. that some kid has put a lot of money into, likely beaten to hell, but would be fast until they blow up lol

On a serious note, how about Camaro SS 1993-2001?? NO coupes? What about a sedan? As someone suggested, e36 m3 would be a great choice. But I dunno if these will cost around 4k. Check it on your own.

Put it this way
Fast+reliable=not cheap Cheap+fast= Not reliable Reliable+cheap=Not fast With 4000 I'd pick up a 2001-2002 civic and call it a day. It would be dumb to get an e36 m3....at that price what kind of shape would the car be. If he wants to save just skip the fast part get something with no headhaches...corolla,civic,sentra,altima.

Champagne taste on a beer budget. You can find an LT1 something with an assload of miles for that ish but I think someone ought to talk some sense into your home slice.
Sit down with him and say "good friend of mine, it's time to put childish thoughts of going fast when you need solid transportation. Fast cars will come with time" Actually don't say that say this "stop being a rah-tard and get a civic" You won't even find a solid s13 240 without a million miles on it, some rust and a ka. Sr20det 240s ricer? Let me guess you have a Tatoo that says "ultimate driving machine" on your lower back don't you |

So he totals his 5, has only $4000 and wants to get something fast?
Well at least it looks like he's more than 1000 miles from from me which is good. Unless he works at garage he better also be prepared to pay the piper if he buys something used and fast because the word reliable doesn't fit there. Seriously, he needs a beater and some patence.

Time for A ----> B ----> A transportation again. Just like high school.
Did they just have liability coverage? or keepin' it real? Need more info, but sounds like a moron or a high schooler. miiipilot

Unless the accident wasn't his fault.
If you can't drive a car properly, we shouldn't recommend him getting on a sportbike. Unless you want him to just kill himself. By this rah-tard will probably put some chick on the back and try to impress her. End result they both will be sloppy joes. miiipilot

Yeah I agree with you guys on him being too picky based on his circumstances. He crashed on a wet freeway ramp. Probably going a little faster than he should have. It was a e39 540. Pretty clean and decently quick car. Me and him went out to Tampa yesterday and he picked up a 97 mustang gt with a supercharged cobra engine swapped into it. He got a good deal I believe for $4600. I cant say it will be reliable though haha

None of these are "fast", but all have strong after markets and can be modded to be very quick while staying reliable.
200sx SE-R or B13 SE-R (sr20 can easily be boosted) Any early model (non crank walk) DSM (eclipse, eagle talon, galant vr4) Early model Subaru 2.5rs EG or EF Civic Si Hatch (watch out for thieves) S13 240sx or 180sx (k24 can easily be boosted or swap an SR20) E30 MKII, MKIII or high mileage MKIV GTIs (VR6s can be found for ~4K) Lexus SC300 (high mileage versions can be found for ~4K) Thats about all I can think of for now. OR like a couple others said, get a sportbike. The only drawback to that would be that you can't ride/drive it in all weather conditions. *Edit - Just saw that the OP found his car. Forgot about mustangs. Last edited by Ken_C; 07-06-2011 at 11:24 PM.. Reason: Read the whole thread :( |

I would say a Honda with a swap. B16/B18. Not the fastest, but definitely not slow. Absolutely the most reliable.
Just saw he got a Mustang. Sounds pretty sick! Hopefully he doesn't wreck it this time. His insurance company must love him.
