It doesn't matter where the plant, a brand new one at that, is located.

Mehico cars will be of same quality as the fatherland.

  • Most options will be the same as G80/G82, and I don't see much of that decontenting that was done with the original F87 compared with F80/F82. Though ceramic brakes and bucket seats seem to be missing, all the drivetrain and suspension things are the same as G82, and even carbon roof will be an option.
  • The wheels will be 19" front and 20" rear, G87 specific design.
  • The first four months of its production will fall into the "M 50th anniversary" period so expect the initial run to become somewhat collectible.
  • And the new dashboard will be standard from day one.

This recipe with the dashboard shown below would be 👌. Where can I place a pre-order now for this version of the future?
I'm driving a 228 loaner now and the dash looks exactly like this photo. iMHO, I hate the layout and the smaller display. As a retired designer, the human factors are worse than the current M2C. Felt inexpensive if I'm being kind.

Not so sure when the previous M5 and M6 offered more power with both a stick and DCT.

To me it purely seems based on a couple things, 1) Cost 2) Streamlining of parts 3) Expansion of M buyers outside of enthusiasts who don't know/care for a DCT.

The DCT was handling M5 levels of power.

It can deal just fine with M2/3/4 levels

There's plenty of crap box cars with DCT standard that aren't marketed to enthusiasts either so I don't buy that argument. M3 has long strayed away from being a car for just enthusiasts. It's a car for who can afford one, same for the 911.

Plenty of deep pocketed individuals buy these cars just because they project a certain image and status. There's manual buy it or get the automatic. DCT was never a substitute for people who are hardcore enthusiasts anyway. Notice the manual is not being sacrificed.

I for one would spec it.
I don't know how BMW is going to keep the M240i G series with Xdrive and 380ish hp from beating the rear wheel drive only G series M2 in stop light race.
I guess our comparison currently should be the M340i and M3

Of course not, the century of ICE has passed an no BEV needs a transmission. Why would they still invest millions in already outphased tech?

For what it is, I think the M340i is a very capable, and thankfully not a terrible looking car

They're moving further away
from what made the 1M so special
and in turn what made the OG M2
also special—-more focused and
LESS options not more.

the more stuff they add, it means
the further away it is getting from
it's more simple and raw roots...

Unfortunate IMO.

They're not all made by the same manufacturer

Porsche PDK makes BMW MDCT seem like old stuff by comparison

We're way too far away from answering that. We'll see the M240 first and then we can sort of get a rough idea there.

We can probably base it off of the G80 though right? Entry price should be about X% below it... likely similar to the F87 vs F80?

1000% this. BMW doesn’t want to spend the money to develop a DCT full stop - they have made the decision that ZF8 is good enough for the market they want to sell to and it fits their margins very nicely. It has nothing to do with performance or enthusiasm.
