The positive of Shanahan's tenure at Washington was that RG3 played his best under him. The negative is the rest of the team played pretty poorly overall. His offenses run the zone blocking scheme that seems to churn out 1000 yard rushers like a factory, so there should definitely be a good power running game. Steve Young credits Shanahan for teaching him how to be a pocket passer. That's a huge positive if Shanahan can do the same to Kap.
My main concern is that his last 14 years as a head coach has produced only one playoff victory. Ideally, I wouldn't mind Shanahan as HC if Fangio stays as DC.

Latest rumor is the 49ers are going to make a push tonite to get Adam Gase signed as the next HC. He is only 36 and been a coordinator for 2 years. Before that he was Denver QB coach for a year and WR coach for Denver a year before that.
Could be a good hire, but not excited about handing the keys over to a young rookie HC with no prior HC jobs ever in his life. This could be a disaster. Have no idea who he would bring in staff wise. I bet Tomsula would become DC. |

I just read on Yahoo Sports that John Fox might be a candidate, now that he has parted ways with the Broncos.

I have to temper my expectations because there is no rock star candidate this time around. I just don't want a complete mess like Nolan/Singletary and their staffs. |

Looks like Baalke and York got their "yes" man that won't rock the boat like Harbaugh. I fear 7-9 seasons for the foreseeable future.

I'll take a wait and see approach. I want to see who is going to be on the staff.
At first glance, I am unimpressed and this hire looks eerily similar to the Singletary hire. Little experience as a coordinator/head coach, on staff hire, and known more as a motivator/position coach and not a tactician/expert on game planning. I hope it turns out to be a genius hire, but this stinks of a hire made to make the owner feel good and not about making the team better. Correction-He was a HC and Def coord in NFL Europe. While not top level, it at least makes me feel better that he has some familiarity with some of the necessary skills needed. Last edited by OneRib; 01-15-2015 at 07:20 PM.. My first thought when I heard it on the radio was, "we went through 8 candidates and they decided on this guy?". Holy crap, this press conference was bad on so many levels. First, Tomsula looked completely unprepared to answer most of the questions. After reading all the positive things about him all across internet, hearing him speak was a huge letdown. In many ways, the way he spoke reminded me a lot of Tommy Boy.
Is this the CLASS you wanted Jed? This press conference had no class! We might as well bring Singletary back. I think he's had enough time to look at the film!

I forgot about that "look at the film" line Singletary always used. Really concerned we are going to go too far back to the pound it out offense. Power running is fine, but only works to a point. You have to be able to get the easy chunk plays. Kaepernick is the key (cliche as every QB on every team is the key). Seattle was a .500 team until Wilson, and they play a similar style. I hope Baalke and Tomsula realize this and don't think they can bludgeon their way to a Super Bowl title. |

Could be worse. Imagine being an Arizona Cardinals fan and the Seahawks are playing the Super Bowl in YOUR stadium!
