This whole thread is proof why companies spend millions on marketing.

It never ceases to amaze me how impressionable people are to corporate marketing tricks.

I take the example of the m340i (which happens to be my daily driver). There is no 340i anymore. So the m340i isn't any higher on the totem pole than the 340i it replaced. BMW simply gave the 340i a tune, slapped an m in front of it, and now people are going ballistic debating its place within the "M" cars. Dynamically it's identical to the 330i. The M3 on the other hand is a totally different monster. Same story with the m550i. BMW replaced the outgoing 550i with an m550i. Yes it's got a more powerful motor, but it doesn't handle any better than the 540i, whereas the M5 is again a completely different monster.

Cars such as the m340i, m550i, etc are examples of BMW capitalizing on its brand power to increase interest on the outgoing 340i and 550i models by slapping m badges in front of their names. And don't come at me with "oh but the m340i has more power than the outgoing 340i". That's just natural progression between generations. The non m-sport g20 330i ALSO has more power/torque than the outgoing f30 330i.

When I was shopping for 4-door coupes (panamera, 4door GT, and 8 series), I drove both the M8 and M850i, the only tangible difference I felt on the test drive with a bit of highway and street is that the M8 is considerably harsher even on "comfort"...

And the M8 dont' have the nice looking glass shifter (and no option for it)...

I think the Mx50i series are what Mercedes now called "AMG Tuned" 43/53s?

I mean I tried the 840i too, and right off the bat, the 850i was massively more "push" off the line than the 840i... but between the 850i and 8, I couldn't tell tbh...

tbh, BMW M companies build the car off the same assembly lines as normal BMW cars don't they? Last time I checked, the M5/M6 were build in Dingolfing Germany, same place where the 8 series are built.

I feel like the answer is obvious right? BMW will tell you very clearly EXACTLY "what an M car is" after you've answered one simple question they'll have for you first: What are you interested in buying?

If the answer is something like an M340i or a M550i, BMW will tell you under no uncertain terms that they are full on M cars. However, if you're planning on buying an M3 or an M4 or something, they will be absolutely certain to let you know that those are in fact the only true M cars.

And why the hell not? Speaking out of both sides of your mouth is gonna sell cars. Oh, there's a logical disconnect here that's starting 18 page long flame wars on the internet amongst people who have already paid their sweet sweet money to the company?? Oh darn. Look, I'm sure they'll come over here and explain how two opposite things can both be true....just as soon as they're done counting all this cash.
