I am a usaa member but in the past they were quite a bit higher for auto and home. But I will give them another shot with the teenager included now to see where they fall.

I don't get why everyone keeps pushing USAA. I had them for a few years when I was in the Marines, mostly because I never shopped around. Turns out I was paying twice as much as I would have with other companies. When my wife and I got married I went back to them for a quote just to see and they quoted me 3x as much as we were paying with State Farm for less coverage than we already had. This was for 2 drivers in their early 30s with no tickets and no accidents. The quote was nearly $600/month.

Yeah I dont use them anymore either. But Im speaking from experience when I say, they are usually much cheaper for young drivers. All my young army buddies and myself saved hundreds of dollars a month initially when we switched to USAA. we were 22 at the time and some even younger (range from 18-24). they all saved a shit ton of money initially.

Atx328 pukicabuki Paliknight is correct because USAA's insurer's pool is, on average, younger than normal because of the active military and dependents that can use it.

However, this is why I've used them since I was 16 (My father was high-level DoD civilian):
- Customer service is far and away the best in the industry.
- It's a controlled-profit company. If it makes too much money in a fiscal year, you get a dividend check.
- Claims are lightning quick -- not just for auto, but for home. I had a Jeep stolen once; it needed about $3,500 in interior repairs. From incident to completion, it took less than two weeks. I had a loft apartment flood once; had damage to rugs, furniture, and music equipment that amounted to about $4.5k. Claims rep visited the next day, and I had a check in four days.
- Car loan rates are by far the best out there -- and you get a better rate with piggyback coverage. I've never had another financial institution come within .75 percentage points of USAA's rates -- and that only happened once.
- Rates are competitive -- and frankly, I'm perfectly happy paying a little more for the above reasons. With the horror stories I've heard about just about every other major insurance company ... yeah.

To respond to your question, it costs more to insure teenage girls for two reasons: texting and makeup.

Here in Southern California the insurance for my then 16-year old daughter to drive a new X1, and occasionally to drive my other cars (then a 445 hp 650i GC and a 445 hp 650i convertible) was $5K per year. The rates slowly dropped. She's 20 now and the rates are still more than mine but coming down.

(I used to have USAA insurance but found it completely uncompetitive when my daughter turned 16. For two years I had Mercury Insurance with her. Now I have CIG.)

If you were enlisted you were on a higher risk rating. You may want to get a new quote. I think their rate structure has changed.

When I got the ridiculous rate quote after I got married I had been out for 7 years and hasn't been with USAA in 5. I've been meaning to get the to quote again just for laughs.

Take the time to shop around, and have some brokers shop for you as well.

Also try asking to sign an exclusion that she will not drive your other cars.

That might bring the rates down in and of itself.
