Depending on what tyres….all the high grip tyres have stiffer sidewalls than the PS4S so going from 20 to 19 on those tyres won’t give you a squirrelly rear. Also the damper settings are now adjustable

Where did you see that they are adjustable dampers? I've never seen a M car come with adjustable dampers from factory. I have only seen BMW offer M Performance suspension kits in the aftermarket that are adjustable.

I'm sure he means adaptive dampers.

Fuck big rims, I'm going to put the stock 18/19s on from the base M3

Yeah those rear 20s are real concern especially if you are looking to drive the car year-round. I am thinking to run all season (DWS 06+ or Crossclimate or Quatrac Pro if available) or even winter tire setup with the 18/19 combo from the base M3 from October to May.

What’s bad about 20s in the rear?

Lack of sidewall to absorb impact. Makes a big difference in our Colorado winters when our roads gets destroyed with potholes everywhere.

Now that I'm thinking about it you could fit 285/35 19" to the rear and overinflate the tires to add some stiffness and stability back if it feels too squirrelly.

Just a friendly FYI, getbmwparts is the BMW Center in Silver Springs, MD. Husker BMW in Lincoln, Nebraska formerly had great prices online (https://www.bmwdirectparts.com/) as well as the BMW/MINI Store in Cincinnati, Ohio. (https://www.thebmwminipartstore.com/)

Can't deviate too much from baseline tire circumferences set by BMW for the xDrive system. Maybe it's 1%, maybe it's not, I don't remember it now but, it's explained in ISTA/AIR and each generation xDrive VTG (transfer case) + DSC is different. Even different tyre thread depths front to back can throw the systems off.

Eye candy video, taking his opinions with a grain of salt though. The 19F/20R sizing is like that for a reason and provides much better dynamic mechanical grip when it comes to acceleration or cornering.

The guys at Kies paid for their set. They are a dealer so they got a discount. We'll have 20" options to combine with a 19" front as people need, but 19/19 can be a viable fitment on these cars, especially for those running much more aggressive track-oriented tire models and compounds that are harder to source in 20" sizing.

Apex wheels are a pretty popular option for track. I don't believe it was a commercial, if it was he would have had to put the YouTube disclaimer that it was a paid for promotion. That said, it can come across as such and I admit I thought the same thing.

I don't get why he decided to run Conti's either. Maybe they were sponsoring him and he got them for free? I thought it was weird that he though at first the front wheels were 20's because of the calipers. I've never in my life seen a car with larger wheels and/or tires up front, unless it was a FWD car or AWD that was biased up front.

I believe BMW runs 20's in the rear because they need to keep the overall wheel/tire diameter within tolerances.

OEM Front 275/35-19"
Overall diameter 675mm

OEM Rear: 285/30-20"
Overall diameter 679mm

If they ran a 285/30-19 in the rear the diameter would only be 654mm so the wheel/tire combo would be too short. If they ran 285/35-19 it would be 682mm which would be too tall. The base M3/4 come stock with Front 18" and Rear 19" wheels and if you do the same math with wheels that are the same size you'll run into the same tolerance issue.

Even though he used 19's front and rear he had to get wider tires than stock, Front 285/35-19, Rear 295/35-19 which helped keep the wheel/tire diameter within acceptable tolerances.

How is the fitment of BMW stock wheels? Meaning are they pretty flush with the fenders are are they regressed (not sure if thats the right word to describe it) inward a little bit like most auto manufacturers?

Definitely not flush. You'll most likely need 12-15mm spacers or more to get a flush look.

Thanks, I heard getting spacers aren't the ideal route to go to be flush. Is that correct? (This is my ignorance on fitment shining through)

Definitely not ideal. Depending on who you ask, some would never consider spacers for that reason whereas others claim no difference. I'd say if you're not tracking it then it shouldn't be an issue.

Factory BMW wheels tend to be fairly inset (less flush) as a safer option. They typically leave generous amounts of room on both the inner and outer edges which benefits us to some degree as we can offer wider fitments in many cases that are still a direct fit. OE offsets and widths are quite safe and work well in essentially all situations but often aren't as flush as some would want.

Ideally you would have a wheel with a more aggressive offset or a wider wheel combined with a purpose-built offset to push the outer edge of the entire assembly further out, but quality hubcentric spacers are a good way to make the OE wheels more aggressive without breaking the bank. You'll need to use extended hardware (bolts or a stud conversion) to run them safely.

I've always run spacers and I'll surely run them again on the G87.

Plan to run my BCF RZ21 from my G80 M3. It's OE spec 19&20. Currently running them with spacers 18F & 13R, but I might end up either not needing spacers or get different sizes.

Do you guys also change the suspension of the cars as well or just put the spacers on and call it a day? I have never done either so not very knowledgeable about this sort of thing.
