Depends on what you mean by "hard to get". This won't be a readily available car like the X3.
Sure, some do pay ADM. I refer to them as idiots, especially on something like an entry level M such as the G87.

Yep.

I got my M2C in February of 2021, right before the market for new cars took off. I got $3,000 off sticker.

The same dealer that sold me the car had a 2021 used M2C on their lot awhile back and they were charging $65K for it.

For some a few thousand doesn't mean much. They'll pay for the convenience.

I’ve agreed with almost everything you’ve posted in this thread, but I’m not sure what you mean by this. BMW has used this allocation process for as long as I’ve been aware of their process (I put an order in the order bank and had to wait on an E46 M3 allocation in 2001)

Don't really want to divulge the process on this forum but it has changed a bit. Yes, to order an M car you're going to have to wait for the store to get an allocation (in rare cases you'll skip the order bank process).

The car is definitely not a limited production car in the sense that they're only going to produce X amount and be done...but there will be a substantial wait for them just like there's still a wait to get a G8X. BMW is not busting out these cars to sit on lots anymore. There is a new allocation process to ensure this.

Stores are going to only be allocated 0-2 per month. Then add 3 months (if all goes according to plan) for the car to get here once you finally get a slot. You're looking at a long wait. My store currently has 11 people in line and once the car is up on the builder...that number will spike. If you do the math, these people will already be waiting a year to get one and that list is only going to continue to grow.
If the salesman I have been dealing with for the original M240i build and order explicitly told me that there's no list for me to get on yet, who (usually) has the authority or knowledge at a BMW dealer to get me on this list? If the answer is dealer-specific, what is the formal (or informal) name of this list? I want to show up and present concrete evidence that this is possible.

Time is of the essence here and I feel like his guidance is pushing me back months with each passing day.

The dealer should have an unofficial internal list. Once the pricing/ordering guides are released, they should be contacting these customers and then should get thrown into the order bank.

Unless they're just holding out and want a bidding war for the first spot?

Every dealer is different and has their own processes.

I was also told that he would let me know if and when his dealer hears about its M2 allocations.

Question: Should I still demand that the build on the M240i be cancelled and my deposit refunded? In theory, I would like to shift my deposit onto an M2 but it seems unlikely that BMW would be willing to build two cars under one deposit, if I can even get an M2 allocation. Not for nothing, but I am reading a lot of information here regarding order banks/allocations/etc. that he doesn't seem to know and it makes me less confident in the restructuring of this deal under his guidance.
I found some extra money laying around the house and wanted to switch my spot to an M3. My dealer said at least 15months out for a spot

I stuck with my #1 spot for the M2

Using this advice, I managed to get the build and order of the M240i disassociated from my name and now will be first in line for when the M2 allocations/online builder make their way to the US. Thank you both very much for the help

Why do dealers require a deposit on a vehicle that will never sit a day on a lot unsold?

If you want the car tagged under your name so that no one else can buy it and you can take delivery once it arrives, you need to show commitment and place a deposit. Saying you will take the car when it arrives means nothing. We need a deposit to tag it sold and do a credit application with you. Also, we will not amend a car to your spec until you place a deposit and are credit approved for finance/lease purchase.
Why would we change a cars spec to your design when you have no commitment to buy the car. Then the car shows up and you don't want it we have to try and sell your spec vs what a popular spec would of been of the spec of someone who is committed to the purchase.

Kind of like how the allocation process is for Porsche. They don't bang out 911s and deliver them to dealerships. A waitlist builds, some allocations are given, then cars are made. Saves dealers money on having cars sitting on their lots. Also, probably, reduces the chances of getting a car below sticker as less cars on the lots means they can hold cars longer.

Amazed how people do not understand how this works.
