When I was a sophomore in High School I worked at a fast food restaurant and had also just received my driver's license.

One day, the restaurant ran out of a required ingredient needed to make chicken and my manager asked me to take his car and go to another franchise to get it.

He asked if I could drive stick and I said yes, even though I had never driven a manual before, but I understood the concept.

I got in his VW Bug and drove off with no issues, no stalls, no lurching; it was second nature to me. Until I tried leaving the other restaurant.

I couldn't get the car in reverse. An employee watching me struggle came over and told me I needed to push down on the shifter to get it into reverse.

For the next 20 years, I drove only stick, until I took a job that was 30 miles each way in heavy, stop and go traffic and it became a chore.

This jogs a hilarious memory for me!!!!
One of my first jobs was a valet at casino. Obviously, some of the cars that came in were manual. Most of us were just fine with manual, I for one, would seek them out Now keep in mind, this was a parking garage that offered valet parking for the Casino, so we saw all types of cars. Rolls to CRv's, M3's to civics.
Anyways, this older model japanese SUV came in, I dont remember the model, we saw that it was a stick, this girl hopped in but before she drove off, we asked her if she wanted one of us to take this one. She said no and started driving away. She made it about halfway up the first ramp and slowed down for some reason. Traffic jam at the top of the ramp perhaps. I had turned away and was ready to get in another car when I heard the little 4 banger revving. I looked up the ramp and she was starting to roll backwards maybe 10-15 feet. She looked worried!!! I heard another rev, then she must have popped the clutch. She did a 4 second-20' burnout and caught the attention of every eye in the garage. Luckily the client had left already. The look on her face when she figured out the back end was drifting out was something I will never forget. I laugh EVERY time I think about it! Nothing bad happened and I gave her some pointers afterwards. She got better in the coming days, and it was quickly a non-issue.
For visual reference, she looked like a real-life version of Meg from Family Guy-minus the hat.

short answer is if you like to manually shift yourself around town. stay far away from the zf8. i tried to like the zf8 in the supra but it was awful. so laggy on downshifts. i really wanted to like the supra. but the m2c dct box is worlds better. feels just as good as the exotic supercar brands (which still use dct for their sports cars and not a torque converter auto)
I switched from a Macan Turbo to a Cayenne Turbo. Awesome SUV, but I had the same issue with downshifts being slow, well compared to PDK in the Macan. The Cayenne was also too big for my liking, so I switched back to a Macan GTS (no mo Turbo). Okay I guess I’ll order manual M2 if I go through with it. My build is F097M0J3.

That’s how I learned to drive stick. We had two command vehicles at the Navy unit I was assigned. One Chevy van with three on the tree and a Chevy Luv Truck with four on the floor. They were about done when I started driving them, so a perfect learning opportunity.

I learned to drive a stick in the early 80s as a valet at a fancy steakhouse.. BMWs, 300zxs, Supras, Starions, 911s, even Merc diesels.

And $80 on a Saturday night cash in my pocket.
It was a Glorious job

Same here but a decade later, probably the most fun I ever had on a job (my girlfriend was a waitress in the restaurant and daughter of the owner), I made friends with a few highrollers who would let me take their cars for joyrides. First time I ever drove an M5, a 358GTS and my favorite, the 964.

3 on the tree is a manual shift on the column with a clutch not an automatic transmission

The shorter gearing definitely seems to help in various situations based on some of the reviews that just got released.

Of course it does.

That's the "beauty" of the manual - you: A) have to know what you're doing B) anticipate the required RPM and gear you need C) appreciate the involvement.

If you don't want to do any of that and just drive at illegal speeds slash brag about 0-60 times, don't get the stick.

One of the issues with N55/S55/B58 engine tuning and turbo sizing I have always had (including with my M240i manual), is that the engines weren't worth revving all the way to the red line due to a distinct fall off in power, but had too much torque lower down in the rev range to not make it worthwhile to use the gearbox to the full extent. A number of the reviews mention this more linear power delivery with the M2 S58 and a willingness to rev to the redline that was missing in previous N55/S55/B58 engines, a much better match and much more satisfying driving experience for a properly driven manual, in my opinion.

N54 too. Redline at 7000, little reason to rev that high.

Coming from a 2018 m4 comp. I loved the DCT and how raw it felt in the low gears. Wish I would have never watched the TH review. I know the ZF8 is not a double clutch. I have a 6MT on order for the M2. Is anyone considering switching to the auto based off of the reviews? Basically every time a reviewer sat in the ZF8 their eyes lit up and they said it felt like a different car. This is primarily a weekend/evening fun car. Won’t track it likely. Won’t be my DD. Yes I’ve read all of the pages regarding how BS the 4th gear test was, the comparison to the F87 4th gear, ratios, etc. Just looking to discuss your overall opinion

From what I've seen, and speaking for myself, no, we're not switching.

Remember, these are people who regularly drive supercars. Going zero to pants on fire is normal to them. Therefore 0-anything .5sec later is slower/less cool/less awesome/less normal.

Especially if you're not tracking the car and it's supposed to be fun, why ditch an opportunity for the last manual ICE BMW and go with a slushbox?

Edit: Yes, it's hardly "slushy". Obviously a very good auto. But point remains, last ICE 6MT combo.

i've tried the ZF8 in the supra. unless they have made drastic changes i would never want that trans in a sporty car. Even top gears review of the M4 CSL the guy literally said 'this trans has no place in a sports car'. upshifts are bang on, but downshifts are laggy compared to DCT.

This does leave manual lovers with a hard choice. the trans is a carry over from the f8x n55/s55 generation which had more low end and the ratios aren't really optimized for a heavier car with the S58.

I would just still recommend the manual though. personally i'd put a m4 comp tune on the engine if i felt i needed more low end, the chance of it blowing your engine or trans in 30-40k miles is probably under 1%. but not everyone is willing to risk that.

That is also what I was thinking. Not looking to break any records here, but also don’t want to regret the choice in a 75k car. Just want the power to be there when I want it and to have an enjoyable drive with the manual gears.

This is the only reason I am getting the m2, is to have the smallest car possible with the s58 and a manual. If I wasn't getting the m2 with a manual I wouldn't be getting the m2, I'd just grab a m240i in tnm.

I don't plan on bogging the car down to 1200 rpm in 4th and complaining that I'm not in the peak power range, I will keep it in higher revs.

I don't need the faster version of the m2, I want the car for fun.
