I also would only change the exhaust. Check out the valvetronic videos on YouTube for the G87. I like that. It does have a nice sound though.

Is this their last 6MT? I keep hearing people say that. So happy I went with the manual. People keep calling it rubbery. In itself it's great. I have nothing to compare it to. I am not going to likely ever drive a supra or Nissan z or any of the cars they compare it to. It's precise and it confidently goes into gear. I can revmatch but love it has the auto revmatch when you want it. It helps to teach my wife to drive it.

Yep 1100 miles of my break in were done on PA back roads over the last 3 days. The car got a good and thorough break in and I feel I can speak to her behaviors on twisties haha. In fact, I can't speak to highway mannerisms whatsoever right now, she hasn't set foot on an interstate yet.


Yes BMW mentioned this was the last ICE manual M car. In one of the early videos with BMW, they said that having a manual at all in this car was of great internal debate. That's why a lot of us believe that the next version of the M2 will be auto only, similar to the M3/M4 comps.

If you want a manual M2, get one now, or when they're available used. No guarantees for tomorrow.

And trust us owners when we say that her shortfalls with the 6MT are greatly exaggerated.

To add a bit more to this, BMW also said the G87 is also M's last pure ICE car. That means future cars will be either pure electric or "mild hybrids." You can't practically pair either powertrain with a manual AFAIK.

So you get a two-fer here. Likely the last manual, likely the last pure ICE. We can hope that the G87 retains the manual for its entire lifecycle, but that's not guaranteed.

Ok so G87 MT should be the same as G80 and I think it is a good manual transmission, interested in where your M2s clutch engages

I think the clutch engagement on M3 varies in sport vs other modes, And yes my cars live above 4K RPM for upshifts as did during break in period. Got my 1200 mile service completed this past week.

The system is entirely hydraulic; nothing changes the bite point

Throttle response curve does change however, so maybe less rev hang if anything

I think the next Miata is reportedly (or possibly) a mild hybrid with a manual. Pretty sure that a mild hybrid works with a manual, it’s probably more a matter that BMW isn’t that interested in manuals and may not want to spend the development dollars to make it work. Still, much may come down to the current manual take rate with these latest models. If curtain coming down on ICE pushes more people to buy manuals, then there may be a business case.

Will see how things play out.

I know it's unrelated but I have a 22 X5MC. It's just the turbo v8. The new ones get the mild hybrid. Not sure if that means anything in the X5 world in terms of value or anything. I'm interested in keeping it but sounds like those engines can have some major issues as they age.

My F87 M2C was setup with the MPERFORMANCE suspension. Fixed all the issues with rear end stability and made car feel very pleasant around forced movement this was in stock MPSS BMW * rated tires.

I am far from an expert, so please know that I’m acknowledging this fact upfront and all that follows is just my opinion.

I had a 2021 G80 6MT, and I loved it. It was my dream to own and M3, and my G80 was my first ever BMW.

But…I grew up driving manual transmissions (I’m 45 now) and found that the MT in my G80 was a bit of a pain in the ass at times. The clutch had a very long release point and the gears on the shifter seemed a bit squishy to me at times.

I am expecting to receive my G87 in just a few weeks, and am eager and excited to do so, but if the MT in the G87 is the same as my G80 was, it won’t be a point that I’m bragging about to anyone.

I agree with this, and I've also been driving MTs for decades.

BMW shifters are little rubbery but I never had trouble getting into the proper gate. They are... ok? Workable, but lack the aesthetic pleasure of the snickty-snickt short throw gearboxes. S2000s, Miatas, etc. it's OK, only OK.

The clutch is less good. The release point is weird, the travel is long, the CDVs that BMW insists on using do no favors.

Aftermarket fixes exist of course, but if we are talking about stock, there's nothing to brag about here.

Fair point. It may be possible to do, but I doubt BMW will invest.

IIRC the previous gen M2 had a MT take rate of about 50% in the US, and under 10% everywhere else. The take rate in the M240 wasn't enough so MT is gone there.

I don't see why BMW would put any real money into MT development.

I'm shocked the Z4 M40i has MT, that's a super low volume car, so I'm guessing that's a complete re-use of existing tech.

Any idea when the G87 competition is gonna be out? How soon can we expect an LCI?

I want to still enjoy my F87 M2C, only have 12K miles since 2019. I am open to embracing a G87C or LCI variant in the near future.

I do want a little more playfulness, for planted ride I’d pick up the G80 but for a M2C I do expect a more lively experience, relatively speaking.

I'm not sure we will get one, since the base G87 is (performance wise) every bit as good as the F87C already. BMW has made no promises that there will be a C. We will get a CS (mules already spotted in the wild).

Business-wise, it's hard to figure out how a G87C could slot in above the base, but still below the G8x. There's already very little daylight between the G87 and its siblings.

I guess they could bump the HP by 10ish (ugh) and make the handling "worse," but that doesn't seem like a compelling offering.

Lacking any other info, I assume we'll get an LCI in 3-4-5 years. So, MY26-MY28.

3) Speaking of that red line. There were/are threads in the F87 forums where we discussed the optimal shift point because of the drastic fall off in power after a certain RPM. That is gone in G87. It pulls ALL. THE. WAY. And has much more to give. Those of you looking to tune will be rewarded handsomely. Me? I've decided this car has plenty of power for Minecraft public roads where mine will spend most of its life, so I'll not be tuning or adding power.

4) #TH4GC. Ah, the purposely bogging down in 4th gear. No, I didn't do it, but I bring it up because the point is that compared to the F87, the G87 does take a second more to build power low in RPMs. #TH4GC grossly over exaggerates how bad it is, though. That being said, I'll take point 3 over point 4 any day because the way I drive, I keep my cars high in the revs, especially the Z4MC which is a dog at low revs while singing at 8K. So my G87 takes a second when bogging it down, oh well, I'll catch you in the top end.

5) Complaints about the manual are also grossly exaggerated. My F87 had a 2nd gear nibble, G87 doesn't. Also, it may be the tune, but I have no troubles shifting G87 in sport+. In F87, I'd sometimes embarrassingly "buck" when pulling out, and have less than smooth 2ng gear shifts. I have no issues in G87. As for my Z4MC, is the shifter the same? I'm not sure, but there's barely any difference. Maybe I'm just used to "shitty" BMW shifters? Possibly. I've never driven any of the claimed good shifters so this could be a case of "I don't know what I don't know." My main point is, I'm no longer interested in "upgrading" my shifter. It's just fine. (My Challengers had a TREMEC and it it was nothing special, either). My car will be living in Sport + at 4500 RPM and higher.

6) Tech tech tech. Tech is take it or leave it and completely up to the end user. While I appreciate my Z4MC for being pretty tech free, if I'm going to have a modern M car, then I want the modern M car tech, and I love it. I remember when I first got into my F87 I thought "Is this from the 80s?" Then I read it was a 2012 interior. I'm so glad we get everything now. I still feel they could have better integrated the screens, but boy do I love what it provides.

7) What's the future hold for my G87 performance wise? Nothing. It's a perfect package for me. The weekend warrior mostly carving back roads in Minecraft, with a BMW CCA track day thrown in here and there. I feel no need to add performance or fiddle with the suspension or anything else. That's me though. You'll have to define your needs and go from there. My main point is that I really feel BMW nailed it. For me.

8) Except maybe the exhaust. I read somewhere that someone wished they could hear the exhaust more. While it does sound really good, I wish it was..., more. So I may be looking at options as they come and see how things develop. But that's purely from an auditory perspective, not performance.



I think that's it. I really love this car and the number of thumbs ups, waves, and chats I've had the last 3 days far outnumber any I've ever had in my F87. It is a car with presence, and is not mistaken for any other car in the lineup. BMW has a winner on its hands. Congrats to everyone that's going to partake!
