Either transmission works great for this car. Auto is quicker, new models have more torque, and your ceiling for tuning capabilities is much higher. The manual trans (what i have) is engaging, the auto rev match is one of my favorite features of the car, and overall it's a very easy gearbox/clutch combo to manage. There also are some small mods you can do to change the way the shifting performs and feels. My only small gripe with the 6mt is you have to keep the revs high to get the power out of it. I came into this car so used to my F22 with the ZF 8 speed. It just went like hell on the low end.

They are both meh. There’s no good choice. The auto has a delay in shifts. When in the most aggressive mode it inserts a jerk that can unsettle car in a turn. The manual is rubbery, the clutch throw is too long, blah blah.

Lots of great points in here and I did search but apparently the app is bugged and didn't have any results.
I did find another thread when I searched on my computer. Lots of good info there. Ultimately I agree with the reasons everyone says they like the manual is why they have it and same for the auto. I would want the aac and remote start. I don't use either much on my Jeep but I would use remote start if the damn thing gave me an indicator it was running. Lights turn on but no visual or audio que. The M uses the phone app so I can do it from further and have confirmation if I'm correct on how it works. Digital key is a nice gimmick but why would I go in my wallet, take out a card when I can leave my key in my pocket and start the car? Unless I'm wrong about how either works. I don't agree with the manual snobs though. They sound like the Merican muscle can never be beat crew 😆 I think the choice for me is to get the best transmission for this car and that's the auto. Someone said they did development on the manual for this car but that's just false as this is the same transmission BMW used for the F series. One thing I'm not sure about is I've heard the manual has a higher rev limit of 7500? But I'm only seeing official stuff showing it as 7000 and sometimes 7200. Anyone have an official document or link for what the rev limit is for each? I know tuning can change that but if you're able to rev higher with the manual that's a bonus. |

^ This is absolutely the best answer to the topic starters question. I used to own a OGM2 MT, later a M2CS DCT, currently G87 ZF8 autobox and a 718 GT4RS, PDK obviously The problem with the BMW MT is the long clutch travel combined with a very high/late engenegant point, it's so non sportiness to me. I hated the clutch and the way it operated/felt (I've always driven MT BMW`s, but the OGM2 was the worst clutch ever) The DCT was fine, but not a macht for the standard PDK, let alone the RS PDK, by far the best box ever. The ZF8 is laggy, pull the paddle always 1-2 seconds early before reacting in the right way. In auto you never can't really steer it with the throttle input, the PDK in auto is sublime on throttle input, it always does wat you want it to do. So neither the MT nor the ZF8 are good, mediocre at best . I can not understand why BMW is not capable of making a transmission like the Porsche. For an M2, as being promoted as ///M BMW finest, its just a shame imho |

I guess you're saying save my money and get a Cayman GTS 4.0 manual or a base Carrera PDK |

Even base PDK in a Cayman / Boxster is better than any BMW slush box, or DCT for that matter.
I also used to own a 981 Cayman GTS, PDK The PDK-engine interaction was absolutely sublime bar none |

Yeah it's ano for me for a base. If I get another 4 cylinder it'll be a 90s Japanese car. Every single car except my last two have been 4s either NA or turbo

The manual M2 is the last of its breed. A true connection back to classic M cars. I will have the rest of my life to drive autos, so I look at this car as sort of a last hurrah.
It is also a great excuse to not let anyone drive your car

Manuals are just more engaging because there’s more to do and if that seems better to you, get a manual. There’s an actual extra foot pedal and a shifter that you have to move into multiple different positions. It’s just fact that it’s more involved and I venture to guess there’s people with M cars that don’t even know how to drive manual.
If you need to be fastest off the line, or drag race every week or don’t know how to drive stick in traffic, get an auto. The only problem is the EV next to you at the light is still gonna smoke you lol. |

Before I put my order in for my 2025 I test drive both the auto and manual M2. My previous car was an 2017 Camaro SS 6 MT which I drove for about 7 years. I wasn’t a fan of the shifter feel of the M2 compared to my Camaro and I was actually surprised to find that the Auto M2 was still fun to drive so I decided to order an Auto M2. Sold my Camaro and will probably at add a 6MT GR 86 for those times I want to drive manual. It’s really a personal choice, can’t go wrong with either I say.

Getting outrun by a GTI in a G87 6MT is a skill issue, not a car issue. ZF8 and 6MT post identical in-gear acceleration, with a slight edge to 6MT on the top end due to less parasitic loss. Randy posted a faster lap time in a G80 6MT vs. ZF8 comp. Figure.

Yeah I didn't understand that either lol. And of it was modded then you can just mod yours. Just add a clutch instead of a transmission tune

It’s really old hearing people say manual is more engaging. That’s not necessarily true. I’ve owned many manual cars and some were much better, like Porsche, than others. I can tell you, I don’t feel like I’m missing out in the auto or a PDK when I’ve driven them. And with the auto, if you like shifting, you still can. You’re not really missing anything by getting the auto and in fact as mentioned above get many benefits that the manual doesn’t have.

I drove my manual Z06 today for 1.5 hours each way to/from a car show. Yes, manuals are a bit more engaging, but after pulling it back in my garage, I had my fill of driving a manual today.
Every morning and afternoon there is 2.5 mi of curves and hills during my commute where I hit the M2 button and use the paddles. It's just as "engaging" as driving my manual Z06. I don't care which one is faster, nor do I care who clocked what times around what track with what transmission. I only care about what I like to drive on a daily basis.
