I'm a few hours in, starts off slow for the first couple hours. The problem I have with JRPG's is that the cheese factor is always there. Playing games like ME2 has spoiled me mabey

I liked X-2. It was a nice change of pace from X, which was a great game in and of itself, and if you ignored the cheezy plot and focuse don just playing the game it was pretty cool.
Unfortunately I am spending Monday-Friday in a hotel room 90 minutes from home for the next two months, and I refuse to play FFXIII on this crappy ass television they have in my room, so I'm going to be playing it in 10 hour spurts over the next month or so. So far I'm liking it. Even though it is back to turn-based combat, the transition is fluid and the load times are non-existent (for PS3, at least) and the new paradigm system allows for the ease of FFXII's gambit system with a much more in-depth level of control (almost on par with FFVII.) I was a little skeptical about the skill advancement system, but it seems to be working out OK so far. The graphics are what is selling me right now. Holy crap, this game is just gorgeous. I understand the 360 players might be missing out a bit in this department, and as I have a PS3, I don't know how it compares, but right now I am just blown away. Furthermore, did I mention the almost non-existent load times? I also love the fact that every member gets CP (the XP for this game) at the same rate, so you don't have to spend a few hours leveling up your other characters like you did in XII. One of my biggest gripes with the latest iterations of the game is the sacrifice of game-play to put you in a more immerse, story driven environment. Well, this game does do that, but in a completely different direction that works incredibly well. So far I give it a solid 9/10, with final judgment reserved until I finish the game, which might not be for some time now. Of course, I am a pretty big FF fanboy, but even someone just picking it up as their first in the series would probably enjoy it if they are not put off by the cheese. Seriously, people, this is Final Fantasy. If you are going to gripe about androgynous boys and an over-the-top story, you have no one but youself to blame, cause you knew what you were getting into. |

lol, it's just messy. flipping back and forth between characters and what's going on with them. way different from what it once was.

Yeah SO always had hard battles...i remember playing the first two, some monsters have powers that can petrify your whole army and then game over....and u just gained like 4 levels and forgot to save...that's when you want to punch someone in the face. i couldn't beat the PS2 version, near the end part the enemies were just insanely brutal, one after a another, wiped out my entire party...and it took forever ot gain level when ur that strong too...i gave up, din't beat it

SO2 is one of my fav rpgs of all time. SO3's battle system was amazing. Hated the item creation though. Story was ok. I didn't mind the twist. Haven't tried of SO4 yet. Maybe after I'm done with FFXIII.

Star Ocean was a little strange for me. I played it but couldn't get into it at all so I just stopped after like an hour or so. I might have to try out the new Final Fantasy if it's good.

if you liked any of the previous FF games, you'd probably like it.

Played Star Ocean a long time ago. It was a good game.
Not really liking FFXIII: there's no exploration, the map is where you can go. There are finite battles.* You don't level up, you Crystogenesis. The story is blah. The characters are bi-polar. It's like watching a bad Japanese animated drama. It reminds me of Godzilla - Final War. It's not explained why you're running/hiding from things when you kill everything easily; and you can jump extremely high and fall from really high without peril. The new battle system is whatever. I'm sure it's hit or miss for some. I don't like it, but I don't hate it. Gone are shops/towns. You do it all at save points. Upgrading existing weapons is cool, but the components used to upgrade are non-sensical. Think my favorite FF games are the ones from Super Famicom: IV, V, and VI. Then the PS ones: Tactics & VII. *After you leave the floating area, the world (Gran Pulse) becomes available to you and you can explore. There are many battles, but you can see the monsters on the map so you can avoid them if you wish. Gran Pulse is amazing. There are large creatures that take up many screens just roaming around. Graphically, this game is beatiful. I still think the story is pretty crappy, and the characters are bi-polar. The action sequences are like watching a bad Asian Kung-Fu or other martial arts movie; the kind where they point guns everywhere and everyone panics...or gets right in someone's face while pointing a gun for nothing. I've come to really dislike the battle system. It's nice the characters move around and all, but sometimes you'll be facing a "self-destruct" type enemy. There's plenty of time to move out of the way, but your characters either just stand there, or walk right into the self-destruct. You can assign them roles, but you can't choose what they do within their role. For example, say you have a "Synergist" with support capabilities. You want to buff just one character repeatedly. You can't do that. Your Syngergist will buff each character, one at a time, with the same buffs in order, A gets Haste, B gets Haste, C gets Haste, now A gets Protect, now B gets Protect, now C gets Protect...

The last FF game I played was FF VII. So this new one was new to me (played it at a friend's house). The battle system obviously has changed but it's still cool nonetheless.
