Precisely. With the rate of failed marriages being what they are and the fact that he is barely post pubescent, it never hurts to CYA.

Congratulations! Definitely take a long engagement. Move in together--really experience each other in close quarters. Young people have a tendency to think love is enough, but it's not. This is going to be hard work.

Just so you're 100% clear on the trouble you can get into no prenup, in many states you can be forced to make incomes equal for 20 years post divorce. Not saying this will happen to you and mean no implication towards your fiancee, but this can literally happen: wife cheats on you and does a gang bang porn or something ridiculous, you leave her, you're making $250K a year and she is making $50K. You leave her WITH CAUSE and you still have to give her $100K a year so you're on equal footing financially. Just something to be mindful of.

ALWAYS SIGN A PRENUP!
It doesn't matter what either of you make. It's just the simple way of being able to exit a marriage the same way you went into it without having to deal with a ton of bullshit. It will also, likely, keep things civil when civility is hard to come by. There is no reason either person should EVER have to give their hard earned money to their ex when a marriage doesn't work out. OP, good luck with your marriage, hopefully it works out for the best for you two, but please do yourself a favor and both of you sign a prenup. |

How are people forgetting that assets before the marriage stay separate property???
Unless the statement I made above is not true, this means that he has even more motivation to get a prenuptial agreement so that all of their future assets are not divided in unfair ways..... By the way, a prenuptial agreement does not mean that both of their property has to stay separate property.... it just puts the division of assets on paper so that there are no surprises |

Congratulations! Best wishes to both of you for the entirety!
Never sign a pre-nup, it WILL set you up for failure. If your partner asks you to sign a pre-nup, just go ahead and cancel the engagement. Seriously. The contingency plan opens up the possibility, it's amazing what that small idea does to couples. Never marry someone before you know them (live with each other for several years first, either dating or engaged), don't marry on a whim, don't marry crazy assholes, and don't marry unless you're 100% sure you're willing to take the risk. I dunno about the rest of these folks, but I didn't ask my wife to marry me just to screw around for a few years and then watch it crash and burn. It's got it's ups and downs but it will work if you put the effort in on the front AND back end. Be smart or don't bother asking the question.

Gotta agree on the pre-nup thing. Its starts things out with negativity and thoughts of failure. Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Not a good idea.
