Depends, what you are a fan of F1 for. If you just like to watch cars race and don't care about the drivers then sure why not, it doesn't affect you (you don't really care about who wins you like to see the cars) and it's a way to get back at the other guys for 'trolling'. Generally I am here for the cars and engineering, but I don't pick drivers either because I really like seeing a whole lot of drivers.

If you just got into F1 and you knew nothing, clearly doesn't make too much sense to pick a team based on what someone else likes.

Aside from this forum, my unsolicited interaction with BMW drivers involves them holding out their phone, taking a picture of my 12 year old car without asking, touching my CF roof and enduring glory stories of impossible lap times at a “fill in the blank” race track. This generally occurs at petrol stations, small price to pay I suppose.

Finding a good spot to leave the car requires brains not balls...

It also requires the car to still work and be able to move, so sometimes it's not an option.

I'm saying you are trolling a troll, because they don't care about being a fan. I didn't say you should or shouldn't be doing.


Remember I was not defending anyone, I was saying if you can't out one person for them not being a "fan of the sport" with your own definition of what you think a fan should be. Because there is no one definition of what constitutes a "fan" otherwise to keep consistency you better call out anyone that talks bad about any aspect of the sport for not being a said "true fan".

Not fan, "true fan" - there are many interpretations to that.


Technically so does the word fan, you may think being a fan means loving the sport for the pure team and driver combination, some may love it just for the cars or just the drivers alone. So you can't apply your preconceived notions to everyone.


Like I don't care that Rick and Mpower support max, good for them support whoever you like. The only bit that is a concern is when you start brining in unproven, unsubstantiated stories and treat them as fact to degrade other drivers or teams. If it was indeed fact and you're calling them out for cheating sure that's warranted. You can have a sport thats enjoyable to watch if some people are playing outside the rules.

You don't get it. Some words have firm meanings in set contexts. Some do not and are left more broad because they describe such broad topics like the term sports fan - informally: a person who is enthusiastic about sports.

The issue comes when someone tries to degrade another person or exclude another person by trying to use the term in a manner that disadvantages a group they dislike. For example you think all fans of f1 should conform to your view, and you filtered it out specifically to exclude chappers. Why are you able to choose who is a fan and to what tier and who is not?

It doesn't have to be black and white yes or no in a decision structure like this, maybe his team/driver is out of the championship battle or maybe he doesn't have a favorite team he just likes a car. But to join in on talks and in on the fun in a race where there are only two horses left, both of which he is not invested/cares about then you have two choice pick a random one, or pick one that you dislike least and suits whatever discussion you are joining. This isn't a permanent pick he isn't shunning the entire sport for this one pick, this is just for the remainder of the season for him to partake in discussion. It is not a complex yes or no lifetime decision like a tattoo.

Yes maybe, but that's not what he said.
There are so many people watching F1, that there are bound to be people that you like and dislike that are cheering for this team or that team. So for me that's not very logical to base your choice on that.
But indeed you're right, watching F1 is not the same as a tattoo.
