I wouldn't use Rittenhouse as a sipper, personally, no.

It's good for cocktails, though, IMO. Manhattans, Sazeracs, Diamondbacks, etc.

So i mentioned that but the person who recommended didn't say anything about a non-sipper. It's fine either way. Glad I tried it. For the same price or few dollars more, there are many rye whiskeys out there that are good for sipping neat.

It's hard to find a bottle under $40 that I would consider a sipper these days. There are a few exceptions but even within my whiskey groups people will sing the praises of a cheap whiskey and I will end up greatly disappointed. It is great compared to the $10 rubbing alcohol that is the only other option at that price point, not actually good on it's own.

I also am not a fan of Saz straight as it is too harsh, I just like Black label less.

Well I decided to replace an almost empty Balvenie 21 Portwood and while I was there try a new scotch. Came home with 2 bottles of hooch. Tried the Fohdry and was very happy.

Haven't popped the vodka yet. Wife wanted it because of the bottle. But eventually when lemons are back in season and homemade lemonade is plentiful we shall have to mix some with it.

It is one of the few Vodkas I can drink straight, although don't get much enjoyment from that as Vodka strives to be pure instead of have character.

I toured the Ocean distillery in Hawaii when I was there and it's a neat little shop with a cool story (and really cool water source)

Bought a few whisky coolers today to try out, mainly because I am curious to try them and don't want to invest in entire bottles until I've tried them first. Macallan Double Cask I'm sure I will like. Johnnie Walker Black I have been wanting to try so did that first. It's an okay whisky. It has a bitter aftertaste that I don't like. It's a bit sweet and sherry like which is fine by me as I like that. A bit thin but pretty smooth. Overall, if it's there I'll drink it but wouldn't buy it again.

So my wife surprised me with a Flaviar membership for a year. Anyone familiar with it or use it?

I get a "premium" bottle and tasting box every quarter. But so far I've found they have a few bottles I've wanted and had a hard time finding near me. Free shipping is part of the membership.

There were 4 bottles to choose from for this quarter, nothing super crazy. Two were Rye I'd never heard of, a 350ml Bottle of Whistle Pig 10yo Rye, and Balcones Baby Blue. I went with the Whistle Pig.

There are a ton of different tasting sets. I went with one called "Peat it, peat it! Vol.2" because I've wanted to try one of the three for a long time. Port Askaig 110° Proof, Kilchoman Sanaig, and Compass Box The Peat Monster (This one I'wanted).

This never looked worth it to me when I first heard of it, but I'm not going to complain, because its always nice when my very spoiled wife spoils me in return.

There were some bottles on my wish list that are cheaper compared to Total Wine, but the selection was hit or miss price wise.

So I cracked open the Smokehead Sherry Bomb the other week - man, it is delicious. So much so, my neighbour is now an immediate fan and we both grabbed another bottle each which was the extent of the availability in our area.

Good scotch though, I'm a fan.

I've heard good things about Smokehead! What does the peat compare to?

Honestly, the sherry is so pronounced in this one, that it really dials down the peat...I guess I would put it middle of the way between an Ardbeg 10 and a Macallan 12...a balance between the two, where the Macallan has next to no peat, but does have the sherry. Very smooth altogether I thought.

So maybe Uigeadail but leaning farther from the peat?

That's one I'd like to have, but I can't find it here, so I can't really compare. Quite possibly.

The first time I had it, I was getting a very strong nutty flavour on the nose (and I liked the smell), but I didn't get that the second time. That being said, the second time was with a cigar, and that may have been overpowering it a bit. I'll be interested to see if it comes back a third time with no cigar.

Pretty much any of the Ardbeg day releases will also have the fruitiness overpowering the peat. There is also the Laphroig PX cask that is a sherry cask finish that is really good. Those are really my favorite kinds of islays, will have to try and find this Smokehead stuff!

Only one of them is even a whisky! Haha. Looks like a good lineup. That whisky in the box sounds like it'll be tasty

My son-in-law asked for a bottle of bourbon for his birthday. He specified Michter's small batch bourbon. I've never heard of it. Is it any good?

Haven't cracked this open yet but I've heard nothing but great things about it.

Otherwise, I'm really liking a variety of Bruichladdich bottles at the moment.

Michters is good stuff. I really prefer both the American Whiskey (one of my favs) and the Rye over the Bourbon but the Bourbon is the easiest to find for sure.

I got the Founders reserve on sale for $25 and it was worth that price but I wouldn't pay more than that myself, it did not really stand out for me compared to other entry level offerings.
