As an owner of a tuned OG M2 there isn't enough improvements from a driving standpoint to really pull me in. Especially after the luke warm early drive reviews. The interior is definitely a step up, but at 3800 lbs I don't think it's going to feel like a drastic improvement from the drivers seat.

I've come to peace with the design now, don't really have a choice otherwise. I'm fine with Brooklyn Grey and non black rims.

Weight and interior I'm going to need more time to come around on.

By all means, please do! They've totally lost their way in my opinion. The F generation was probably the last great lineup from BMW (and why I'll probably never sell my M235). I'm just saying that by in large, the bloat we've seen across the entire auto industry is due to crash test safety requirements (because people can't stop distracting themselves or be bothered to learn basic vehicle control) and wanting every creature comfort available.

Car is just "ok". It probably won't elicit the same degree of lust as the F87, but this is really all that matters:

This is the car they really should do a "performance edition" for unlike the useless marketing one for the F87. Include manual cf seats, cf roof, single zone climate. Delete all the other optional comfort stuff. Even an optional BMW hidden tow hitch would have been cool considering they say 1/5 sold will see track time.

What if there was a m2 that was 20 hp more, had better interior and light weight parts so it was 100 lbs lighter and cost $10k more. Would you pay for one rather than this m2?

What if it already exists as a m4…. Both have its design woes but you can also get it with idrive 7 until 2023….

Even though I hate the beaver front, I might be going down this path and buying one in black. Tried getting a gts 4.0 but they told me I had to buy bunch of add on parts and a $5k watch. What in the world!

E82 1M owners sitting & watching the F87 M2 owners get so mad, sad, and sensitive after the G87 launch is so LOOOOOOOOL.

been there—done that. You will get over it.

I still don't like the F87 after driving many—and some of you won't like the G87 later either. It's OK. Keep your car and enjoy it if you do—no need to bring violence on others excited about the new M2.

Seeing a lot of comments around weight and understandable given the numbers we are looking at ,but has anyone looked into WHY this car weighs as much as it does? What's driving the increase?

I say this because I've driven a G8x at 10/10th at BMW's M-driving school in Spartanburg and the G8x, even though heavier than my M4cs or the M2 Competition (which was also there to drive as a side-by-side), the G8x drives lovely, and in fact the chassis feels better integrated to handle the power, as well as being more stable in feel and better front-end grip/steering response.
Okay, but it is rather annoying that the M2 is 21 cm shorter than the M4 and weighs exactly the same.
Obviously it will drive divinely thanks to the shorter wheelbase, but it's a shame that no effort was made to reduce the weight, at least the same as they did on the M4.
The substantial difference in torque and power would have kept them at arm's length in terms of performance anyway.

Worth noting it's $12.5k more for the m4, which is a big step up from a $62200 car. Also I've seen so many different weight figures for the g8x gen, I really hope we get an apples to apples m2 weight comparison.

I will say this... being that it is heavier, is longer, has adaptive suspension and wider tires, I expect that it will be a LOT more stable than the previous gen... it won't take much to make it a better handling / performance car... it may actually perform really well around a track as opposed to the F87 which did nothing but bounce and slide around a track.

I will also add, the manual transmission with the dual screens looks so out of place I don't even know where to start.

The new platform is heavier due to its increased dimensions, rigidity and safety measures.
You cannot compare the platform of the RS3 (basically a longer VW Polo, hence a city car) with the CLAR (a shorter 5-series, hence a premium luxury sedan).
It is clearly felt in terms of handling, comfort and ride quality, it's the same difference between a professional instrument and its toy copy.

Yeah CLAR is used for everything from the new 2 series to the 7 series and X7.

It wasn't used for F80/F82 M3 and M4 or F87 M2. It was used for F90 M5.

Think of this car as a 2 door M5.

But all kidding aside, the Supra is on CLAR and it weighs 3400 pounds. So I think the added weight has to do with the cooling for the S58 engine as well.

Actually the Durango is 5000lb. Which the M2 will weigh in two generations at this rate.

I expect the G87c to be similar to the G8x, which is a lot more stable around a fast track after my M-driving school experience with both of them.

The F87c just doesn't have the chassis to put down the power, and the suspension, although great for the F-chassis, isn't as cohesive in how it responds like the G8x. The F-series chassis always feels like the front and rear's never worked together at the limit to me.

G80 hood and front fenders are aluminum. Not sure if G87 gets the same.

You have a good point on apples to apples but a CS that might weigh maybe 100 lbs less but have 20 hp more with same tq to keep the manual and suddenly people are willing to pay $20k more. It would be nice to get weight figures. If it does end up weighing more than a strip down m4 manual, I might as well order the m4 and save my self $10k from the cs and keep my ac and heat buttons.

I still can't say I love it as much as prior MY but red does make its body lines look a little better than the blue in the leaked images. I don't get the increase in size and weight though. This is supposed to be your light nimble sports car. Why are you sneaking it into 3 series territory. People who buy this aren't looking to haul warehouse store loads of groceries or 7 kids around town. While I'm sure the thing handles like a dream still it just seems like an odd direction. Especially when this thing ultimately will go all electric and by default pack on another 4-500 pounds.
